Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlee Maghlorio.
Hi Marlee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Being an illegal immigrant most of my childhood up to my teenage years made me stronger in wanting to accomplish my goals. As a teenager not being able to go to a Cal State or UC because my family couldn’t afford tuition was a heartbreak because I always knew I wanted to continue my education out of High School. Instead, I went to a community college where I had a mindset of being a doctor. Well, that didn’t turn out the way I wanted when I transferred to UCR. I joined an internship at a hospital where I learned that I wasn’t in love with the field. That’s when I made the decision to change to a Psychology Major. There were so many negatives from the people around me, what am I going to do with that degree? Is it even worth it? It even go to questioning myself and what I was going to do.
When I graduated, I was determined to find a job with my degree and that’s when I started in the ABA field and working with children in Autism. It was a challenging job where I had no idea what I was doing and the training was not so great. I was able to do research on my own and be more proactive in that field. When I realize I could be giving more help that’s when I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. I had a full-time job, went to school at night, and the last year of school I had a practicum (Intership). Now that I think about it, I really had no idea how I did that. Now I can honestly say that I am happy where I am today. Trying to help individuals battle their anxiety, stress, hopelessness that they are currently experiencing in their everyday life. I am still in the learning process of my career, but I know I have been capable to helping individuals reach their desired goals by tailoring evidence based interventions to their current life experiences and situations.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I do not believe in a smooth road when it comes to achieving our goals. There will always be some obstacles along the way that makes us better at what we do. For me, those struggles were not fitting in at some agency’s where I was employed. I felt I was more of a product that was bringing in revenue to that agency. I think that’s where therapists who are getting started feel stuck because we don’t have a say in what we truly deserve since we are new to the field.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the moment I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. I enjoy working with individuals and couples. I focus on every age group and have loved working with children, teens, and adults. I am proud of helping my clients accomplish their goals and seeing the improvements they make all on their own. I focus on tailoring therapy for each individual to what they are experiencing in their lives. I used evidence-based interventions such as CBT, DBT, talk therapy, solution-focused, and EFT.
What’s next?
My future goal is to start my own private practice, where I can supervise other associates and give them the environment they deserve. Where it can be a learning experience all around.
