Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Huitsing.
When Karen Huitsing arrived in the L.A. film scene nine years ago, she quickly developed a reputation for unblemished makeup application. She is an accomplished professional whose attention to detail has awarded her numerous accolades while building a clientele of highly talented creative professionals.
After attending M.U.D. Karen went straight to work, going into business for herself. Her fresh approach, and far from modish outcomes, have kept Karen out-in-front of most makeup trends. She found refuge at Art Center College of Design working with a handful of filmmakers who challenged her every creative instinct. She works with them still as they become the new blood of an ever-changing industry.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never easy being a freelancer. Every day you have to fight the next fresh upcoming makeup artists for jobs. It’s very discouraging when I don’t get the job but I have to remind myself that I am talented and that makes work even harder on the next job.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
It’s hard to say my proudest moment because every job I work on gets better and better. I’m proud to say I worked with Snoop Dogg on one of his music videos. Also, the Jabbawockeez and other amazing dancers who teamed up with #CokeREDmoves to bring awareness to people who have HIV.
I’m proud of every moment I get to do what I love!
Were there moments when you had to struggle?
I have to struggle every day to put myself out there and find work. A few years ago I could not pay my rent but luckily have an amazing family who support me and what I do. It’s not easy when you live in a city competing with thousands of other people who are trying to do the same thing you are.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe Los Angeles is the best and worst place to be a makeup artist. You have to be very hungry, competitive, and the best what you do otherwise you will not get hired and you will be forgotten. I would only recommend artists’ with the mentality “never give up, never give in” to pursue their dream.
I feel so lucky to have worked hard and still continue to improve my skills to get to where I am today in my career!
