Meet Mariluz Gonzalez of Vesper Public Relations in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariluz Gonzalez.

After graduating with a B.A. in Latin American Studies from UCLA, I began working in public relations with well-established entertainment labels.

However, my love of Latino Arts & Culture and entrepreneurial spirit led me to successfully launch Vesper Public Relations & Marketing in 2008.

Moreover, my career has also led me to be a long-time co-host of KPFK’s long-running Latin Alternative music show, Travel Tips for Aztlan, bringing a deeper level of entertainment expertise to Vesper’s clients.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As the owner of an independent PR agency, actually, I should be totally honest and start by saying as the female owner of an independent agency, I have faced numerous obstacles mostly related to being overlooked, or considered less than larger firms.

There have been times when the big agency got the gig that I feel should have gone to either Vesper or at least to another PR agency that is more familiar with Latin media. There’s even been a time when Vesper was hired to secure Latin media after the big agency failed to provide the type of coverage Vesper is known for.

Also, I have to admit that I feel the barrier of the financial glass ceiling. I’m not entirely certain if I’m not getting the big global brand name clients because I’m a small independent agency or if it’s because I’m a woman, but I’ve definitely felt that ceiling. It’s ok though because I am confident I’ll break through soon.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Vesper’s extensive knowledge in the diverse, contemporary Latino culture and the team’s reputable relationships with various media producers and other cultural influencers & hard work ethic differentiates the agency as true specialists in the industry.

Recently I was honored with the ‘Social Consciousness Award’ by the Southern California chapter of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) for our volunteer public relations support with them.

What were you like growing up?
I proudly grew up in Pacoima in the East San Fernando Valley, where I still reside & very proud of. Growing up, I was always interested in school, the arts & music.

I attended San Fernando High and belonged to the high school marching band playing the clarinet, which I enjoyed very much performing in different venues & events in the city. That was a wonderful experience .
