Meet IVY from Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to IVY.

IVY, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I discovered music at a young age, between living with my mom and living with my dad. They both listened to two totally different styles. Mom, she was more Hip-hop/Rap and R&b. Dad loved Doo-wop, Blues, and Soul. With my mom, we would play music all day, watch music videos on 106 & Park, and I would dance and sing. My older sister, Sue, would always sing “4 Page Letter” by Aaliyah, and from watching/listening to her, I was intrigued. I wanted to try it for myself. Once I did, I turned into the girl who would always sing and dance with a towel on her head. My passion arrived!

I began songwriting in 5th grade and developed a specific interest in rapping while doing so. Once I reached my second semester in college, I dropped out to fully commit to my passion. Which allowed me up to work in a studio for a year, leading to the release of my first child (aka project) “Vis-a-Vis”. Soon after, I was casted for a reality show called “I Got This” based in Virginia, focusing on my music goals and the creative process. Virginia gave me great memories and opportunities, but something was pulling me to LA.

Today, I am where I am supposed to be. I have been here for a year and six months and I have dabbled in acting, met great acquaintances, helped others and learned so much about who I am as an individual and a Hip/hop & Rap artist. I am very proud to say I am currently working on new music for my next project and I have my first lead in a film coming out soon produced by Ahlan Williams called “For Better or For Worse”. I am happy here, and with the process I have made in such short time and I look forward to making more of it!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. What I can say is, when you are confident in your talents, you keep your head down and do the work, and you trust in God to lead you to the right people and places at the right time, things become a bit more easy for you mentally. You have everything you need, you just have to believe it. I have faced being homeless, losing friends, missing major family events, and I am sure I pissed my dad and family off for dropping out of college for music. But! I would rather have all my challenges rather than a smooth road. Each challenge I mentioned and didn’t mention had a huge impact on the artist I am today.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My name is IVY, and I am a Hip-hop/Rap Artist. I am most proud of my ability to stay consistent in developing my talent out of the public eye in a society that wants you to showboat and post every little thing you do. I am proud of my recent discovered strength, my stories, and the growth of my songwriting as an artist. Whats sets me apart from others is my lyrics, my voice, and the relatability to my music.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My ability to zone out, focus and be disciplined. Also, my ability to feel my way through the creative process instead of forcing a song together.
