Today we’d like to introduce you to Lukas Geppert.
Hi Lukas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Sure, thank you so much for having me!
I am a producer and media composer here in Los Angeles, originally from Bayreuth, Germany. Growing up there, music was all around since I can remember. Thus, I started playing the Cello and Piano from a very young age.
Also growing up with the iconic “Lord Of The Rings” and “The Dark Knight” made me fall in love with film music early on. However, during high school, also a passion for songwriting and bands started, which guided me to teaching myself the guitar, Cubase and I started to produce for local projects. But when I did an internship with a local game composer I really knew that I wanted to pursue a path in media music & producing. I guess I was just always flashed how you can mix up various Genres to create a unique sound for a certain project.
I then studied my undergrad in Music Technology to get my productions sounding the best possible way, while I was collaborating with various artists and directors. At some point, I knew that I wanted to just try to make it in LA, applied to USC, got in as one of the youngest USC screen scoring students ever, and had probably the best year of my life doing their program! During this time, I had the incredible privilege of getting mentored by the great Thomas Newman and collaborating with talented filmmakers.
Being from Germany and being a massive soccer fan, my personal pinnacle was, when I was recently given the incredible honor to rearrange and produce music for the farewell of the captain and goalkeeper of my favorite soccer team, the 1. FC Köln. Hearing a stadium of 40 000 people singing to it was an incredible proud moment for me! I’m currently working on various exciting projects and can hopefully announce some of them very soon!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was honestly not so easy to adapt to this gigantic city when I was still 20 years old. In the beginning, I couldn’t get a car, or go out. Also being so far away from home is sometimes very difficult. However, I am very happy that my family is always very supportive.
I think obviously COVID was difficult for all of us, especially because that’s when I applied for USC and nobody at that time knew if I would be even allowed to travel, if the school would be in person, and how everything works out. But luckily everything went well!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Besides composing for media, I still have a huge passion for producing and songwriting. I am proud that I released recently my new own single: “Ghosts Of The Outcasts” , which I completely wrote, produced, and mastered all by myself. Collaborating with singers is also just very fulfilling for me as I always believe that the most fresh and creative writings come through collaborative ideas. Thus, I am also trying to establish myself as a producer/songwriter on Spotify and my socials!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think as a starting film composer the quality and the sound of your productions often matter more to people than being able to be the greatest orchestrator. The ability to produce music on a professional level and to mock things up realistically is a crucial asset to have!
