Meet Lu Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lu Wang.

Lu Wang

Hi Lu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from Beijing, China. I have been accompanied by art since birth, engaging in piano, dance, singing, and hosting. Art is not something foreign to me; it is a part of who I am. Rather than adhering to the constraints of reality, I prefer to feel, experiencing everything in the world with the heart of an artist. During my junior and senior high school years, I attended a professional dance school to systematically study dance. I learned Chinese classical dance and Chinese folk dance. After graduating from high school, feeling the urge to explore a broader world, I decided to come to the United States to study dance. I have been pursuing my graduate studies at New York University ever since. I plan to continue my artistic career in New York City afterward. I am an interdisciplinary artist, engaging in dance performance, choreography, photography, video production, and more. Words and labels can only superficially introduce me. I actually dislike labels such as “artist.” I am simply me, continuously exploring and living out my true self in this world.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Actually, I have experienced some difficulties. But I still want to say that my journey has been very smooth. In fact, life, for me, boils down to two words: choices. You choose the path you take, choose the kind of person you want to be, choose the mindset with which you accept and experience the world, choose the company you keep, choose your preferences, and choose whether to move towards what’s “good” or “bad” for you. My journey has been smooth because I always choose the positive path. If I fail, it’s okay, I try again. If I find flaws, it’s okay; I identify and adjust them. Self-reflection is crucial. Instead of blaming others, blaming the world, or blaming external circumstances, it’s better to quiet down and carefully contemplate from within. Everything lies within a single thought. I would say that all the “difficulties” in my life have been good for me; they propelled the smoothness of my journey. Some people might say, “Don’t deceive yourself.” But actually, it’s not deception; it’s transformation after thoughtful consideration. Every situation has more than one perspective, and every person has more than one choice. That’s why I don’t like rules and constraints because they limit thought.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a freelance choreographer and dancer. I enjoy creating, as well as delving deeper into my inner self within my own creative works. I have a strong curiosity, to be precise, it’s curiosity about people and the depths of my own inner self. I appreciate abstract concepts and profound feelings. Imagine this: you’re alone on stage, lights shining down on you, music playing. In that moment, you forget everything else; you’re immersed in the new world you’ve created, moving your body, feeling the vibrations deep within yourself. I don’t particularly like words; compared to the confines of text, I feel that dance can more clearly express what I want to convey. Because not all feelings can be described with words. I enjoy experiencing depth; the deeper, the better. Through creation, I stimulate endless thoughts within myself. What I’m most proud of is being able to live my own life and create my own world in this rule-bound world.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I feel there’s not much “happy” in my life. Instead of “happy,” I prefer to use the term “natural” to describe the emotions I experience when I do feel joy. In the real world, I’m actually someone with very stable emotions. So, I rarely appear either happy or unhappy. I enjoy the feeling of being at peace with the world, the feeling of not being bound by rules, and the feeling of endless intellectual evolution. I am relatively free from desires. Interestingly, when I create artistic works, I seem more like a flesh-and-blood person. Regardless, I feel that external factors can’t bring me “happiness,” yet every moment I can experience “happiness” because I enjoy living every minute of my life.
