Meet Los Feliz Artist: Derek Schiller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Schiller.

Derek, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Wisconsin. I’ve been drawing and sketching throughout my entire life and picked up painting at fourteen. I started with acrylic and quickly moved into oils. I moved to Chicago in 2006 and began donating artwork to several foundations and charities, which in turn had introduced me to gaining high-profile clients, such as Chicago natives, Mike Ditka and Bill Murray. In 2011, I moved to Los Angeles to expand my network and allow more creative freedom for myself. I have exhibited work in various venues throughout LA, initially starting with a series of portraits depicting classic Hollywood film stars. Within the last year, I have shifted my subject matter and started photographing Instagram models and using the photos I take as a reference to paint as portraits. My goal with the recent shift in subject is to reach out to a younger demographic and to give myself more creative control. I work every day, whether it be for an hour or twelve hours.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are definitely artistic challenges along the way, however, I feel it’s important to not focus on what isn’t working and instead focus on how to make it work. That is how we grow as artists and welcome our challenges.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Each time I finish a painting is a great feeling of accomplishment.

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
I think there is constantly a struggle for an artist to be perfect and to create the outcome that is envisioned. Finding a way through a rough patch often leads to an exceptional result. Continuing to work and not giving up is the main objective.

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
I think Los Angeles is a great place for any artist. The community feeds off of each other and the creativity seems to overwhelm the environment.

Derek’s V-Cut installation was a revelation. I have marveled at every new turn in his creative interest. In my humble estimation, he’s a budding young force on the art scene and truly humble individual. Wishing you unbrideled success.
