Meet Pasadena Photographer: Oscar Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Garcia.

Oscar, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I kind of stumbled into photography, I was studying programming in Spain and was asked by a friend to take pictures for her wedding, the pictures came out pretty good friends began asking me to take headshots/portraits and I loved it I bought myself an SLR and ditched computer programming the rest is history.

Photography became my life. Two years later I finished my degree and I started working as an assistant for Hearst Magazines, Spain, working for magazines such as ELLE, Car and Driver and Harper’s Bazar.
As an assistant, I learned a lot from big photographers from all over the world. After a few months, I started retouching for them and then was hired on as a photographer.

I realized in order to reach my professional goals I would have to learn English all the big magazines, models and celebrities from Europe andAmerica spoke English.

I studied English in San Francisco and later moved to Los Angeles. Before I realized it I was working as a photographer for modeling agencies and fashion companies. I decided LA was the place I needed to be.
Due to my Visa status I moved to South America for 2 years but was fortunate enough to get a Visa, and here I am.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think is smooth for anyone. Every time I moved to a different city I had to start from the bottom, working for free, low budget projects, making connections, It’s all about connections, obviously you have to be a good photographer, but it’s very important to meet the right people and be in the right place at the right time.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
I was a quiet but observant kid. Very mature for my age. I used to like to draw and play video games.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Spending summers at the beach with friends and family.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
My immediate goal is to have my own studio. My long-term goal is to work with more fashion magazines and modeling agencies or record labels.
