Today we’d like to introduce you to the ever so lovely Marissa Vossen.
Marissa Vossen is a Los Angeles-based makeup artist that serves the fashion and entertainment industries. The self-taught cosmetics artist began like many girls do: playing with mom’s makeup!
As Marissa got older, she combined her interest in makeup with her passion for dance. She did her own makeup for every show, and people started to take notice. By the time she was in high school, Marissa was doing makeup for friends attending proms, weddings, and special events. That’s when she realized that she loved what she was doing.
Marissa got hired as a MAC makeup artist in her first year of college. She had a great time but ultimately decided to follow her dream. She moved to LA and began doing photo shoots for aspiring models and actresses. From there, she moved on to test shoots for various models and magazines. From there her passions grew into a career.
Has it been a smooth road?
When building a career of course there will always be some bumps along the way. In those struggles, I learned a lot and that’s what made me want to work harder. It’s the bumps that keep you on your toes.
I remember when I first started doing makeup in LA there was a job I got the opportunity to work on. It was a television movie and I had never done makeup on a movie set or any film set. I literally had no clue what the process was working on a movie set. I just acted like I knew what I was doing and paid close attention to my surroundings. I remember being so nervous. To this day it was one of the most important learning experiences of my career as a makeup artist.
What role has luck had in your life and career?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck… I believe our destiny is destined. Even the “bad luck” moments all happen for a reason. It’s the struggle that keeps me on my toes. I’ve learned a lot from hard times and I’ve found that out of the hard times can come a lot of accomplishment.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Positive energy…Positivity is contagious. If you are happy and positive those surrounding you feel it and that’s a vibe people enjoy having around.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I love that Los Angeles is such a melting pot of people and cultures. A city where the opportunities are endless. If you put in the work anything is really possible or attainable here.
What I like least would have to be the traffic. I’m sure everyone living here or visiting here can agree with me on that one.
