Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Stark.
Logan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A few years ago I was working as a programmer at a startup job in El Segundo and I was unhappy with my situation. My girlfriend at the time had a graphic design company that would occasionally offer web design. We worked on a few projects together before I decided to leave my full-time job. I felt there was no reason to stick around a place where I was unappreciated when I am making more money freelancing than my regular check paid me. There was also the very enticing perk of being able to work from anywhere.
Everything was fine for a bit but then we broke up and she took my roommate with her who was bringing me deals at the time. I found myself with no broker, no deals, no steady cash flow coming in, and burning through all my savings.
I quickly took Craigslist and started replying to hundreds of ads for web design a day but to no avail. I decided to put ads on Craigslist and indeed looking for sales people and offering them commission to start. That got me a few employees but no real deals to speak of. The next best course of action I could think of was to go to networking events and start schmoozing with people. It seems to help a bit but not enough.
Reality was setting in. I hadn’t paid my bills in months, my mother couldn’t lend me any money. I had no money for rent and no steady cash flow. My girlfriend was tired of paying the rent and I was about to be homeless 3000 miles away from anyone that would take me in. One day she takes me downtown and makes me stand in line to apply for assistance so we can pay the electric bill. I looked around and realized I was surrounded dregs for lack of better word. That’s was the start of change. Something inside of me woke up. I was not like these people, I would never be like these people and I would never let myself. Become this kind of person. I kept repeating to myself I have two hands two feet a mouth and a brain that works it’s time to really get to work. I knew if there ever was a time to stand up and be a man this was it.
I started listening to the right people’s advice. I swallowed my pride told my friends what I was up to and started borrowing money. Those that could and were able to help did. I began going to seminars to learn how to be a better entrepreneur. I took my power back from those that I gave control to. Around this time my girlfriend noticed the change in me and realized it was consistent. She reached out to her friends and utilized her network and started bringing deals in. Using the money from those deals, I started marketing and using lead generation services.
As the work started coming in, I paid close attention to my industry and started seeing where its weak points were. The next steps became apparent. I decided that I was not only going to be in the upper echelon but I wanted help change the way my industry is viewed. I would take comfort in knowing that my clients will be extremely happy and more than willing to refer people to me.
While addressing some of weak few points, I started offering more and more services, becoming more and more of a one-stop-shop. Suddenly, I found myself with different kinds of work and no longer able to say that we were just a Web design company or Web Services Agency. Eventually we became a Creative Services Agency. I guess they say be careful what you wish for because it will come true. For many years, I wish that I could be like one of the characters in the show Mad Men and now I’m living it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not it has not. Almost being homeless and having no way to get back to my family. Not knowing where my next meal would come from.
Wondering if today was the day the electricity would be cut.
Create “N” Evolve – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a Creative Services Agency that specializes in Custom Web Design and UX Design.
We are known for our minimal design and great customer service.
I’d say we are most proud of that fact that we continue to grow. We dislike stagnation, and are not afraid to go beyond our comfort zone in search of better ways to deliver exceptional service.
What sets us apart from others is that we genuinely care. That one sounds a bit cliché` I know, but we do. We take calls from some of our clients after business hours and on the weekends. In a town where everyone is too busy for anyone other than themselves we make it a point to get to know our client’s close friends and family.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment thus far was telling my mother that she could leave her job at the end of the year and help run a corporate consulting initiative I am currently putting together.
