Today we’d like to introduce you to Letty Cabrera-Calvo.
Hi Letty, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never intended in starting a business but the universe had other things in mind. I was working a job that I absolutely did not enjoy in 2012 and therefore decided to go back to school to obtain my MBA. Midway through the program, I took a “Start-Up” business course where we had to come up with a business idea and develop it from start to end. My first job out of high school was as a beauty advisor, therefore I had a special place in my heart for makeup. As I was doing my makeup one day and at the same time thinking about a business idea for the Start-Up business class that was due to start in a few weeks, I realized I did not have a napkin handing to wipe my favorite makeup brush clean. That is when I had that lightbulb moment, there had to be a way to instantly clean my favorite makeup brush so that I can apply different eye shadow colors without any color transfer. This is how the concept of Color Switch, instant brush cleaner, began. I created prototypes and sent them to beauty influencers and after a famous Instagram influencer posted our Color Switch, we had a full-blown business out of our garage in a month.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, when you have a business you have high highs and low lows. It is the nature of the beast but sometimes the low lows help inspire you to prove that you have what it takes to run a successful business. One of the biggest struggles has always been, copycats. I combat that by continuing to innovate and stay ahead of the competition.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in innovative beauty tools. I always try to solve a problem in beauty with a product invention or recreation. This sets us apart from others because even when we create a product that already exists, I make sure I put an innovative spin on it.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I like to keep a close group of other entrepreneurs that I can help and that can help me when needed. I also follow brands that I enjoy and I look at what they are doing to stay cohesive and consistent, which helps inspire me.
