Today we’d like to introduce you to Lamayah
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Brooklyn, New York, always a shy kid but quickly fell in love with music when I first heard Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson. I thought they were simply magical, and I wanted to inspire through music the way they inspired me. Music has always been in me. My dad is a singer and musician from Guyana, and music runs in his family. My grandmother sings and plays the banjo. From middle-school to college, I learned the Violin, Guitar, flute, and I learned Piano during the COVID pandemic lockdown. I was born to create music. Once I got older and was comfortable in my skin, I started booking local gigs, touring around the east coast and wrote 2 EP’s. I wrote and arrange my own music. I am very proud of all I’ve accomplished and I am already on a next level and continuing that momentum. Next up, a Grammy!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been easy at all. I’ve always been very considerate of others around me, mainly my family and sometime family life can be rough, so I spent a lot of time worrying about others and not taking care of myself. I also had my own struggles with self esteem and social anxiety. My social anxiety hindered me a lot throughout my life. But, I believe everything happens for a reason. I may not have been ready back then to pursue music. I had to learn life and learn me. I am so much more confident now and solely focused on me and what I love to do and exploring my purpose in life, which I believe is it help others, through music and sharing knowledge.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am very proud that I write all my songs and arrange them all with the instruments I’ve learned. Writing is actually my first love. I started with poetry, then short stories, and then songs. I wasn’t shy about writing. I didn’t have to be in front of others and be audible. Writing was my safe creative space. I believe what sets me apart from others is my genuineness and spirit. I always have good intentions, and I always want to put a smile on someone’s face. I’m a problem solver. I won’t be ok until others around me are ok and I pick up on energy so I can tell when someone is down, or someone is in good spirits. Even when I don’t, I always find someone who thanks me for just singing.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love to journal. It’s a way to get my thoughts out and it’s really cool to go back years in the past and see how much I’ve progressed. I also love Iyanla
Vanzant and her teachings. I’m always in the mood for a self help book and I’m very much into astrology and the esoteric. I love to read birth charts and do tarot card readings for myself.
