Meet Lake Balboa Photographer: Cory Barker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Barker.

Cory, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out in photography as a retoucher. I used to mess around with photoshop while editing my former band’s pictures. I somehow landed a job working as a retoucher for a large photography studio even though I didn’t really know what I was doing at the time, I guess they liked me enough though to train me. I didn’t even pick up a camera until a couple of years later but was really good at photoshop already so I figured I may as well learn photography too. I bought a little Nikon DSLR and just started shooting everything, nature, family and any good looking friends. haha.. I basically taught myself by shooting a lot, reading articles, watching youtube videos, trying out new equipment and a lot of trial and error. Most of the jobs I got paid for at the beginning were through people I met, friends and referrals. I’ve done weddings, fashion campaigns, products, family portraits etc. I am now focused on headshot photography for actors, professionals and college students.

Has it been a smooth road?
Is anything ever really a smooth road? haha.. A challenge I’ve encountered is finding a specific type and style of photography to focus on. Before I was kind of all over the place, shooting everything from weddings and fashion to products and family pictures, etc. I read a book called “The One Thing” and have since then focused mostly on headshots. Another challenge is with marketing. As a creative person, it’s not the most glamorous or fun thing to do figuring out a marketing plan, but at the end of the day, it’s something that needs to get done.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
I just got a really amazing new natural light headshot space so I’m excited to start the New Year shooting with this amazing new light. So far it’s a hit with clients!

Let’s explore some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way. What was the most difficult part of your career so far?
I went through a divorce a few years ago that was hard especially because I was a step Dad, but coming out of it made me get back to focusing on myself and working on my crafts such as Photography and Music.

What about “Wow-moments” – any moments that stick out? Any moments when you felt like you had made it?
Anytime you get really good feedback from complete strangers it confirms that what you are doing is actually good work and it’s not just me thinking it’s good or just my Mom or somebody. haha.. When you get paid the first time for doing something you love doing is the greatest feeling in the world! Also, the first time you see your work published is pretty rad too!
