Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamira Wells.
Tamira, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. I have always shown an interest in fashion and styling from a young age. I used to play dress up with my Nana’s closet. Fashion has always played a huge role throughout my family. My Nana was a seamstress and made priest robes. My late aunt Cynthia Belinda Wells Jones was a trunk model for Michael Kors and owned a popular 90’s clothing brand with her husband called New Heritage. Which I just relaunched 3 months ago in memory of them and to continue their legacy.
In 2009 I decided I wanted more than my hometown had to offer and made the leap to Los Angeles. While here I met celebrity stylist Jennifer Austin while attending a television show taping and was offered the position as her assistant. Austin shortly developed into my mentor and I was able to expand my portfolio doing editorial, fashion, television shows, music videos and more.
For the last 3 yrs while rebuilding the New Heritage Brand I worked full-time for Diesel Black Gold on Melrose as a PR Stylist which allowed be to build relationships and style a various amount of celebrities such as Usher, Ringo Starr, Kendrick Lamar, Colton Haynes, Rami Malek “Top Chef” Michael Voltaggio, Vera Wang and others.
I have currently relaunched New Heritage this past May and will be doing pop-up shops all over the United States in hopes to go international. I am also working on submitting some of my wardrobe styling work to several magazines/online publications and building connections.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all! Some days when you feel close you aren’t. I have been let down by other people finances weren’t right. But you have to keep moving and make a way and find other opportunities
What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I would like to collaborate with sneaker brands, street artist and designers. Open up a New Heritage creative arts hub for creatives to collaborate and design.
Let’s explore some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way. What was the most difficult part of your career so far?
The hardest time in my career is right now I was recently let go from my job of 6 yrs. It’s kinda hard to swallow so many memories, good times and bad. But I launched New Heritage before I was let go. The hardest part is staying afloat and continuing to make more product. But I realize everything happens for a reason and this is apart of my journey. Every day is a new day and you can always start over nothing last forever. It sounds cliche, but “Life is What you Make it”
Are there days when you feel like you’ve done everything you wanted to, careerwise – the “I’ve made it” kind of moments?
Some WOW moments for me are looking back into my journal I wrote 8 yrs ago while still in Baltimore and looking at my life now and thinking WOW I am really living in my dreams everything I wrote in the past.
