Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Mengel.
Hi Ken, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, where sports, physical activity, and the outdoors were a way of life. From hiking and backpacking to just being active in nature, movement has always been a part of who I am. That early connection to health and the human body sparked a lifelong passion—and ultimately shaped my professional path.
During my undergraduate years, I discovered physical therapy and immediately knew it was my calling. Helping people move better, recover stronger, and perform at their best combined everything I valued about health, science, and human potential. From 1994 through 2017, I worked in private practice orthopedics and sports medicine, gaining invaluable experience treating athletes and active individuals across all levels.
In 2017, I took a leap of faith and stepped out on my own, founding KM Golf Performance—a specialized sports performance training and physical therapy practice dedicated to golfers of all ages and abilities. My mission has always been clear: keep the athlete healthy first, then help them unlock their highest performance potential.
At KM Golf Performance, I emphasize a team-based approach that goes beyond the swing. True performance comes from integrating the physical, nutritional, and mental aspects of the game. That holistic philosophy ultimately led to the publication of my book, The Golf Performance Code: Unlocking Secrets of Mind, Body, and Nutrition, released in September of this year.
My journey has been about combining science, experience, and passion to help golfers move better, feel better, and play their best golf—for life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While no road is ever perfectly smooth, I feel truly fortunate to have known from a young age that health, wellness, and fitness were my passions. Over time, that focus evolved into a deep commitment to the sport of golf. It’s been a privilege to work within such an integrity-driven community—from the teaching professionals to the athletes themselves. Golf is both mentally demanding and physically taxing, creating a genuine need for skilled professionals who understand the body and the game at a deeper level.
One of the pivotal challenges in my career was stepping away from a stable position as a physical therapist in a clinical setting to start my own specialized practice. That decision required faith and courage—but with the unwavering support of my wife and family, the leap became less daunting and ultimately one of the most rewarding choices I’ve ever made.
On a more personal level, the past few years have brought profound loss. My father’s passing in 2023 was difficult—he was one of my greatest supporters and role models. Then, in 2024, the loss of my son was the most devastating experience imaginable. Finding purpose each day became essential. My family, my work, my colleagues, and my book project offered me focus and meaning during times when it felt impossible to move forward.
Through these experiences, I’ve learned that every challenge—no matter how painful—can be a catalyst for growth. I believe I’ve become a stronger husband, father, friend, and professional because of what I’ve been through, and I strive to honor those I’ve lost by living each day with purpose and gratitude.
As you know, we’re big fans of KM Golf Performance. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Golf performance training and physical therapy have been my professional focus since 2015, and in 2017 I made the decision to dedicate myself to it full time. I founded KM Golf Performance in January 2023 with a clear vision—to provide golfers with a level of care and individualized attention rarely found in larger settings.
As the owner and sole practitioner, I have the autonomy to deliver service the way it should be: professional, friendly, and personal. Every session is conducted one-on-one and begins with a comprehensive evaluation that considers not just physical function, but also the golfer’s goals, playing style, and long-term development.
Golf is an incredibly complex sport with distinct physical and biomechanical demands. What sets my approach apart is the combination of deep clinical expertise in the body’s capabilities and limitations—both in health and through injury—and the ability to translate that understanding into tangible performance outcomes.
My strength lies in identifying the why behind each client’s movement patterns or limitations, communicating clearly, and building collaboration among the golfer, coach, and support team. That partnership-driven, holistic model has become a hallmark of KM Golf Performance—and the foundation of every success story I’ve been fortunate to be a part of.
I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built with my clients and colleagues, and of creating a space where golfers feel seen, understood, and genuinely supported. For your readers, I want them to know that KM Golf Performance is more than training or rehab—it’s about unlocking potential, restoring confidence, and helping every golfer move, feel, and perform at their best
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a professional mentor is absolutely essential to building a successful and fulfilling career—especially in the early years. For young physical therapists, I encourage seeking out a practice that includes highly skilled, experienced clinicians who are willing to teach and collaborate. Share your cases with them, ask questions, and openly discuss your reasoning versus theirs. Those conversations are where true learning happens.
It’s important to be comfortable with not knowing—because genuine growth begins when we admit what we don’t yet understand. Humility creates the space for learning, while confidence allows you to apply that knowledge with purpose. Together, they form the foundation not only for clinical excellence, but for leadership and mentorship later in your career.
Ultimately, the best mentors help you develop your own voice and perspective, while reminding you that learning never really ends—no matter how experienced you become.
