Meet Kayla Rodd

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Rodd. Kayla was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Kyza Williamson.

Hi Kayla , we’re so thrilled to have you sharing your story with us today. Maybe we can kick things off by having you introduce yourself to our readers? We’d love to have you go into your story and how you got to where you are today.
I like to refer to my story as my “light bulb” moment. At 19 years old I was trying to figure out my life path and what direction I wanted to take. I had a lot of different interests and aspirations but nothing I was passionate about pursuing as a career. Around this time, I had been given the opportunity to attend a family members hospital delivery of their baby. That was my “light bulb” moment. Watching the nurses work together with different members of the interdisciplinary team; all working towards the common goal of bringing life into this world seemed like the most meaningful profession I could pursue. I decided right then to pursue my nursing school journey. I started taking the prerequisites required to applying to nursing school, got in and eventually graduated with my bachelors of science in nursing in the fall of 2020. Having graduated during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, my introduction into the nursing world was specifically tailored to pandemic nursing, i worked many different facets of the Covid-19 response including mass screenings, mass vaccinations, and bedside nursing care. As the pandemic wound down, I found myself needing a change of pace and that is when I discovered elementary school nursing.

Let’s talk about your work and career – what else should we know?
In my practice as a credentialed school nurse, I am able to be at the forefront of fostering inclusion for students. I am able to provide families with resources to preventive health care services in order for each student to attend school safely. I am able to assist sit students with obtaining prescription glasses through free vision clinics in order for each student to have equal access to the educational curriculum. As a school nurse to elementary school students, I am uniquely positioned to serve as a health advocate for my students. From a young age, students can come to my health office and express their health concerns in a safe place, free from judgement, where their feelings will be validated. Every student that comes into my health office has a voice that is respected and heard. For our students who can not speak for themselves and have alternate forms of expressive communication, I am able to tailor my assessment to the individual child, paying special attention to body language, gestures, facial expressions and consolability. I am aware that every student is unique; therefore the care I give is adjusted to meet the unique healthcare needs of each individual student. In this way, I can help make the school an inclusive place where students are safe, healthy, and thrive.

Kyza Williamson and Kyza Mychelle have been great to us and I know you’ve got a great relationship with them as well. Maybe you can tell our audience a bit about Kyza Williamson and Kyza Mychelle and your experience with them.
Back in 2018, while I was deep in the throes of my nursing school journey, I found myself walking around with a mess of brassy and broken tresses. I was in desperate need of a new hair stylist. I needed someone proficient in the art of blonding and took to the internet for my search for perfectly toned blonde hues. By divine intervention, I found Kyza Mychlle. Her reviews were glowing and her client’s photos were immaculate, with not a streak of brassy or broken blonde in sight. In that moment I knew it was another “light bulb” moment. At out first appointment, she surveyed the scene, gathering intel like a detective; searching through my hair for what went wrong in the past and what our path would be moving forward. Being the upmost professional that she is, she helped me set realistic expectations for what level of blonde we could go in that appointment, while keeping in mind the ultimate goal was platinum blonde. She has successfully transformed my hair from brassy and broken to bright platinum blonde and healthy. She has been by my side through countless major life events, styling me for my wedding day and even fitting me in for a hair refresh the day before I was scheduled to give birth to my daughter! I look forward to our monthly sessions that leave me feeling confident and refreshed and I feel so lucky to call Kyza not only my amazing hair stylist, but also my best friend.
