Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Huang.
Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
If you had told me five years ago that I’d be running two astrology-inspired companies, co-hosting a podcast on the connections between sexuality and spirituality, and have a published book out on astrology and crystal healing, I wouldn’t have believed you. But here I am.
What started as a simple business idea of creating a zodiac-themed brand turned into so much more than I could’ve ever imagined. Before I founded my first astrology-inspired company, Love By Luna, in late 2015, my experience with the subject was rather limited. Besides reading my horoscope in Teen Vogue growing up, I didn’t know much about astrology. Yes, I was as skeptical as the next person about it. Yes, I thought it was most likely a pseudoscience. Yes, I wondered how people could truly believe in it. However, once I actually researched the system of astrology, understood how it worked, and saw its potential for introducing larger discussions of mental health awareness and mindfulness from an inclusive, positive space, I was inspired to share what I had learned. From that point on, I went on to co-found MoonBox, a self-care subscription box service aligned with the lunar cycle, started co-hosting the Sex Magic Podcast, and earlier this year, my first book, Crystal Zodiac: An Astrological Guide to Enhancing Your Life With Crystals, was just released!
Ultimately, throughout this journey, I realized that astrology (and a number of other mystical resources) aren’t just for mystics and that you don’t need to “believe” in them in order to receive value and insights from them. Bottom line, astrology isn’t the fanatical, quasi-religion that many perceive it to be. It doesn’t replace logic. It doesn’t replace science. It doesn’t replace critical thinking. It’s not the end-all-be-all, and it certainly shouldn’t be used as a singular source of guidance. However, it does have tremendous value as a tool of mindfulness, introspection, and personal growth, and the best part is—anyone can learn how to use it. No fancy products or prior experience required. The only thing you need is an open mind.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say my biggest struggle (and proudest achievement) thus far, has been my book, Crystal Zodiac. I’ve never been a fast writer, and I wrote the entire manuscript on a very compressed timeline (about 2.5 months). It was emotionally, physically, and mentally challenging. It pushed me to my limits and really made me re-evaluate my relationship to work. A lot of sacrifices had to be made to get it done, but it was worth it in the end.
That being said, life is always full of surprises, and even the best laid plans are subject to change, so I don’t think the journey—whether business or personal—is ever really “smooth.” You try. Sometimes you fail, but you learn, and you grow. A lot of people view struggles and mistakes in a negative light when they’re really just a natural part of the process of building something of value. When you’re navigating a business for the first time, you’re bound to make some blunders (I’ve made many), but that’s ok! What’s important is that you learn from these moments, remain flexible with your plans and expectations, and never stop evolving. Innovation stops where complacency starts.
Please tell us about Love By Luna, MoonBox, & Sex Magic Podcast.
I’m involved with a few different businesses, but in a nutshell—Love By Luna is an astrology-inspired lifestyle brand that sells a variety of zodiac-themed offerings (crystal sets, nail polish, gem-infused oils, etc.), MoonBox is a self-care subscription box aligned with the lunar cycle that delivers quarterly curations of wellness, beauty, and spiritual tools, and Sex Magic Podcast is a podcast I co-host that discusses the connections between sexuality and spirituality across various cultures and traditions.
In the bigger picture though, a key component of every business or group that I’m a part of is accessibility. Love By Luna is about making astrology accessible to all, MoonBox is about making mindfulness practices accessible to all, Sex Magic Podcast is about making sex magic accessible to all. Likewise, my book, Crystal Zodiac, breaks down the practical applications of crystal healing for beginners and advanced users alike. No matter someone’s knowledge or level of experience, I want them to feel immediately welcomed within the space I’ve created, and be excited to learn something new.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
It’s hard to say what I would change since everything that I’ve done has gotten me to where I am today. If I had to choose though, I’d say giving myself more breaks and prioritizing rest. You have a finite amount of creative energy that’s available every day, and if you don’t spend time replenishing that creative well, and taking care of your physical body, it’ll end up hurting you in the long run.
