Meet Kate Ferguson of Lot Club in Silicon Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Ferguson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kate. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My interest in the creative arts and the entertainment industry started when I was very young. I’ve always loved writing, photography, movies, all of it, and after graduating college I moved to L.A. to study acting. For a number of years, I was auditioning while working the classic “day jobs” and also doing things like interning at vocal studios…just trying to soak up as much as I could.

At a certain point, I decided to seek out a bit more consistency in the day job department while still allowing flexibility and space for creative projects, which is when I started freelance writing. That started out as journalism and copywriting, then later creating my own arts & lifestyle site Divvy Mag, and ultimately diving into screenwriting.

Around the same time, I also started working in social media, which is where I had my entry and introduction to the tech industry. I started working with an early stage startup where I helped create a social and editorial presence to successfully gain funding. That gave me a whole new perspective on the value of creativity. And what goes into launching a tech startup.

Since then, I have continued to freelance in social media and marketing while working on my own creative projects. In brief, at the moment, I have three short films in various stages of production, as either a writer, producer, and/or actress. I’m getting ready to direct for the first time, which I’m very excited about, and one of my screenwriting partners and I have had some meetings during quarantine about a pilot we wrote a few years ago, which in and of itself is exciting. To say that I do a lot of writing (and rewriting!) would be a vast understatement.

Getting to the conception of Lot Club, the majority of the more pivotal opportunities that I’ve had have come out of some type of existing relationship or connection made through on online networking avenue…not through a traditional means of seeking work. I started working in tech because of my own social media, I met a screenwriting partner on a dating app, and I met my Lot Club Co-Founder while working together on another project. Community of some sort has played a big part, but it’s been somewhat random and chance oriented.

When I think about specifically seeking something out or making new connections, particularly when it comes to film projects, I have less clarity about where to go beyond my direct network. I’ve been here for years, but in many ways, I feel like I’m just getting started. Part of the continual evolution moving forward is within the self, and part of it is finding like-minded people. With Lot Club, we’re trying to create a place where the community can better make and sustain those connections…especially as we navigate quarantine and beyond.

Has it been a smooth road?
Overall I’d say winding! On one hand, being involved in various things at once (instead of having one single focus) can make the journey feel long. (Or look non-existent to the people in your life who don’t quite get what it is that you’re up to.) On the other hand, there’s a broad experience to apply to each thing, and that just builds on itself over time. The launch of Lot Club is a good example of that, an intersection of different industries I’ve happened to spend some time in. With any of this, there are going to be challenged! So many of them! But that’s where you’re asked to grow, which is always a good thing, and it also makes things feel pretty magical when they ultimately come together.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lot Club – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.

Dislikes: that so many of my friends have moved away.
