Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Stephens
Hi Julian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My passion for film began at a very young age. I received my first camera at the age of five and was known for always capturing moments with friends and family. Throughout middle school and high school, I enjoyed creating short films with my friends, which solidified my desire to pursue a career in film.
After high school, I attended film school at Arizona State University to deepen my understanding of the industry. Upon graduating, I had the privilege of starting my career as a Production Assistant on the first season of *True Detective* in New Orleans—an experience that remains one of the highlights of my career. It was there that I truly fell in love with the art of filmmaking and knew that this was the path I wanted to follow.
I continued to work on various productions, eventually being promoted to Assistant Location Manager during the third season of *True Detective* in Arkansas, thanks to the guidance and belief of the esteemed Location Manager, Batou Chandler. Her mentorship was invaluable, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunities she provided me.
Over the years, I’ve had the honor of contributing to several high-profile television shows, including *Big Little Lies*, *Winning Time: The Lakers Dynasty*, and *The Rookie*. Most recently, I was a Key for the upcoming film *Wolves*, starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
I’ve dedicated over a decade to the film industry, and I’m immensely grateful for the experiences and success I’ve had. However, the recent strike prompted me to reflect and explore new opportunities. Leveraging my experience, education, and passion for visual storytelling, I decided to embark on a new journey by launching my own photography and videography company.
I’ve been fortunate to find success in real estate photography, creating content for real estate professionals, filming DJ sets, and producing social media content for creatives. I’m excited to continue expanding my expertise in helping these talented individuals maximize their full potential. I genuinely enjoy collaborating with my incredible clients, bringing their visions to life. I’m eager to see where this journey takes us, and I’m committed to pursuing new opportunities with enthusiasm and dedication.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This career most definitely has its challenges, like all careers. Getting a tv show or movie out of state is tough. It’s hard to leave your friends and family for long periods of time. Also what’s challenging is becoming close to your colleagues in these other states and then leaving them to go back home after creating such close friendships. It’s also a very rewarding, but yet demanding business with the long hour days. And of course, the pandemic and strike was hard on every body.
As for Starting a business, it comes with its share of risks and challenges. It can be challenging to showcase your abilities, even when you have confidence in your skills. I’ve been very fortunate to have had clients who trusted me from the beginning and gave me the opportunity to demonstrate the value I could bring. I’m extremely grateful for their support and belief in my work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer and videographer, born and raised in Los Angeles, with a diverse range of expertise. I work in various areas, including real estate photography, creating content for real estate professionals, capturing headshots, filming DJ sets, and producing content for creatives.
I take great pride in the fact that, despite the challenges and hardships I’ve faced, I have remained true to myself, my craft, and my passion for film.
What truly sets me apart is the compassion and dedication I have for others and their creative visions. While I may be the filmmaker, my greatest fulfillment comes from bringing their dreams and ideas to life. I strive to understand their perspective and work diligently to achieve what they envision. When they succeed, it’s a success we share together.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My first mentor, Batou Chandler, took me under her wing when I was just 21, fresh out of college. She taught me everything I know about the business and the world of locations, for which I am deeply grateful.
Greg Alpert, another successful location manager, has also played a significant role in my career, guiding me through my later years in the industry. His mentorship has been invaluable, and I will always be thankful for his support.
And, of course, my fiancée, Nicolle Metsos, who has stood by my side for the past 12 years. Her unwavering support of my career, dreams, and endeavors has been my foundation. She is my rock and my biggest cheerleader.
