Meet Julia Underwood of Julia Underwood Midwifery Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Underwood.

Hi Julia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I saw my first birth when I was 16. It was a Homebirth Vaginal Delivery After C section (HBAC). My sister assigned me the role of being the photographer in an attempt to scare me from having sex. I was fascinated and terrified all at once. It started to develop this fascination around birth and would watch “A baby story” and other birth related shows on TLC. I also supported my best friend who was a teen mother. Before I had kids I had been at several births. Then when I had kids I switched from an OB at 20 weeks to a midwife at a birth center.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Midwifery school is not easy. There are many barriers to getting through school whole, with your family in tacts and without debit. During midwifery school I had a lot of family challenges that came up and also the fall out of Covid.

As a licensed midwife there are a lot of barriers for me as a provider especially when wanting to support black families. Clients that transfer can experience prejudice for choosing and out of hospital experience. For BIPOC communities they have the bias and racism. I am also not listened to or respected as a provider in these scenarios.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Julia Underwood Midwifery Services?
I provide support for low risk birthing families looking for out of hospital birthing options i.e home or birth center. It includes comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care, as well as lactation counseling. Our focus is on providing clinical care that emphasizes emotional support and educational guidance throughout the families journey.

I am committed to ensuring that every client receives compassionate, holistic and personalized care.

My services include
60-minute prenatal and postpartum appointments

• Schedule for visits once a month till 28 weeks, bi-monthly from 28-36 weeks, weekly from 36 weeks till birth.

• Skilled birth support in an out of hospital setting that is personalized to the family.

• 24 hour and 1 week postpartum homevisit, in office postpartum visit for 3 week and 6 week appointment.

• Obstetrical labs done in the office and run through insurance.

• Referrals made for ultrasound and other specialist.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I services all of Los Angeles. I like that a hospital option is always close in proximity if we need to transfer care. I do not like how hospital providers do not have a system to have collaborative care. I would like to see transfer of care a smother transition.
