Today we’d like to introduce you to JHOANN GONZALEZ.

Hi JHOANN, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
About ten years ago, my life changed dramatically. I was out at a bar with friends when someone drugged my drink. Within five minutes, I lost consciousness and later woke up in a hospital. It was a terrifying and disorienting experience—but sadly, not a unique one. As I started to research more about drink spiking, I discovered just how common this issue was, especially among young people in nightlife and social settings.

This personal experience became the catalyst for something greater. I felt a responsibility to take action and help prevent this from happening to others. That’s when I began developing a product that could quickly and easily test drinks for drugs. Eventually, this led to the founding of TEST MY DRINK, a company that launched a simple but powerful solution: test strips that detect common date-rape drugs like GHB and Ketamine.

Driven by the same mission, I later created another company called SECURE YOUR DRINK, which introduced a reusable silicone lid cover designed to physically protect drinks from tampering. This product not only prevents substances from being added to drinks but also helps avoid spills and fits various sizes of cups and glasses.

What started as a personal mission has grown into a global initiative. Our products are now sold in countries including Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, etc. We’ve partnered with major institutions—universities, city governments, organizations—and our most impactful market to date is the state of California.

In fact, we’re incredibly proud to share that California passed a groundbreaking law inspired by our products. Assembly Bill 1524 mandates that by January 1, 2025, all universities, colleges, and secondary schools in the state must stock anti-drink-spiking kits in their health centers and make them available to everyone, free of charge.

What began as a personal tragedy has turned into a movement for prevention, safety, and empowerment. We’re just getting started.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, definitely not. The road to where we are today has been full of challenges. Developing innovative products like drug-detection test strips and reusable drink covers sounds simple in theory—but in reality, it involved years of research, testing, and constant problem-solving. Getting the formulas right, ensuring the tests were accurate and reliable, finding the right materials for durability and safety—it all took time and persistence.

Beyond the technical side, navigating the legal and business aspects was just as difficult. Securing trademarks and patents was a complex, expensive, and time-consuming process, especially as we were expanding into different countries. Each market had its own regulatory hurdles and logistical issues we had to overcome.

There were also moments of doubt—times when progress felt slow, or when people didn’t believe this kind of product was necessary. But we stayed committed to the mission, knowing how many lives this could impact.

Despite the obstacles, we kept moving forward—and we did it. Today, our products are protected, trusted, and distributed globally. Every struggle made us stronger, and every challenge helped shape the success we’re now proud to share.

What are you most proud of brand-wise?

We’re incredibly proud that our work led to real legislative change. That kind of impact is what we dreamed of when we started—turning a personal story into a public safety movement.

We also want readers to know that this isn’t just a business for us—it’s personal. These products were born out of lived experience, and everything we create is rooted in empathy, innovation, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Both good and bad luck have played a role in my journey though I’d say it was bad luck that started it all.

What happened to me years ago being drugged without warning was one of the worst and most traumatic experiences of my life. It was a moment of pure bad luck that changed everything. But from that dark experience came a powerful sense of purpose. If that night hadn’t happened, I may never have been driven to create products that now help protect thousands of people.

On the other hand, I’ve had moments of good luck too like meeting the right people at the right time, or coming across opportunities that opened new doors for the business. Still, I believe that what some call “luck” is often the result of hard work, preparation, and persistence aligning with opportunity.

So while luck both good and bad played a role, what really shaped the path forward was not giving up. Turning something painful into something impactful is what I’m most proud of.
