Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Salgado
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jessica Salgado I am a full-time social media content creator with 500,000+ folowers across my social media platforms. This which was completely unplanned. I never intended for my full- time job to be content creation or as many call it being an “influencer”.
I started the content creation journey during the pandemic when everything was pure chaos not only for myself but for everyone. It was very dark and uncertain times in everyone’s lives. Finding myself going into a premature labor at only 32 weeks with my first baby was very unexpected at that time in Feb of 2020 just as Covid was starting to be more and more concerning. Luckily my little Luna was fine and discharged after being in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for a month. Soon after my mom had a stroke that left me devastated. Since she was my only resource for babysitting my little Luna, I drastically had to quit my job.
With everything that was happening I began to shift my mind and focus on something that would bring me joy. TikTok was trending at the time and short form content was in the rise. I started filming “outfits of the day” and fashion videos. Slowly I began to increase my following. I was very happy that people liked what I was creating and that kept me going and forgetting about my current problems. Four years later here we are. This has become my full -time career. I get to work with amazing brands that never in a million years I thought I would have the pleasure of working with. I feel very blessed to wake up every day doing what truly makes me happy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth ride. Finding myself trying to find the balance between life and content creation was tough. Specially in the beginning. I would wake up at 5am to put on makeup and film while my newborn baby was still sleeping. I would edit while she was taking naps. Until this day I still wake up at 4:30am-5:00am am to take advantage of the day. But besides learning how to manage time. The imposter syndrome is hard to overcome, the feeling of not belonging or not deserving is always there. That is something that I need to work on internally. I know I work very hard to have achieved what I have and I need to be proud of myself for that. It’s hard looking back at the little Jessica growing up in a poor Mexican little town and accepting that this is my life now it feels very surreal. Also, another big challenge has been to overcome criticism. There will always be someone not liking what you do but learning how to not take it personal was difficult at first. Now, I can say I am better at facing negativity.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create content in areas such as fashion, beauty and lifestyle. I create a lot of styling videos, outfit inspirations type of videos and provide work outfit ideas. I also edit my own videos and learned on my own. I have worked with different well-known brands within the industry such as Target, Walmart, Ardell Beauty, T Mobile, Shark Beauty, Ross, JCPenney and many more. I am very proud of everything that I have achieved thus far and I just want to tell anyone to always chase their dreams, it truly is never too late, never too unrealistic or too unachievable. If you work hard enough you can achieve anything you put your mind to it doesn’t matter your financial status as well. I started with nothing and now I am living my dream life.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
A lot of people do not know about my childhood or where I came from. Even though I was born in California I left to Mexico with my mom and two sisters when my parents separated, I was 3 at the time. We were financially struggling, I remember my mom would not eat as much just so my sisters and I could eat more. We came back to Los Angeles when I was 10 and I did not know any English. It was so tough! But after 3years my English got better and better.
