Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Logan.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From a young age, I knew that my passion lay in the world of art. As a child, I would capture my emotions in sketches, spending hours crafting illustrations for my personal publications. During the festive season, I would gift my friends and family with cards and paintings, delighting in the positive reactions my art brought.
While my journey toward becoming a professional artist has been fraught with challenges and moments of doubt, I have always known that I was meant to create. Through years of introspection, I found my unique voice and had the courage to wield it with purpose.
My education has been eclectic, spanning the seemingly disparate fields of fashion design and animal science. Nonetheless, both have played a vital role in shaping the artist I am today. My fashion degree expanded my creativity beyond the confines of pencil and paper, while animal science honed my empathy for living beings and fueled my desire for healing. My art is a reflection of my journey, my experiences, and my community. As I grow and evolve, so does my work, which incorporates a variety of media to create depth and texture.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Commodifying creativity is a big obstacle that I face as an artist. Creating art is a passion, but it is not always easy to turn that passion into profit. I had to learn how to balance my creative vision with the demands of the market or a client, which can be a delicate balance to strike. It can be disheartening to have to compromise one’s artistic vision to make a living.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for my portrait-style paintings. As an African American woman, I take immense pride in my culture. My recent artwork celebrates the strength and allure of the black community while reflecting on the anguish and turmoil faced historically and in present times. As an artist, I recognize the potency of visuals in shaping our perception of the environment around us. My goal is to fuel hope and transformation with my art.
What does success mean to you?
Success is discovering your purpose in this life and fulfilling said purpose.
