Meet Jane Hamor of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Hamor.

Hi Jane, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was a teenager, learning how to navigate a new hormonal landscape, I realized that if I manipulated the small space of my bedroom, I could alter my own psychology. The manic rearrangement of furniture correlated to feeling young and trapped, but after shifting the environment I felt cleansed, held, and in control. This was the beginning of my fixation with space. From there, I channeled this infatuation into choreography, an excuse to combine my love for physical movement with this newfound, enigmatic concept. After an undergraduate BFA in dance and a minor in theater design I was led to scenography, a field where I could synthesize these materials, mediums, and ideas to create a complete atmosphere on stage. After a 5 year stint in Brooklyn, I came back to LA to receive an MFA from CalArts in 2024.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel grateful to have always had a strong intuition, even if that comes with a knack for depression.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a hard time describing myself as a person and have never identified as an artist. It feels too all-encompassing or something. Because my work exists in a world of image and perspective I think it’s best for people to come up with their own interpretations. But basically, I create environments for narratives to live in. janehamor.com

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always enjoyed being alone. Rebellious, independent, very hands on (lots of tumblr projects), introspective
