Meet Jamilah – Ruba & Luna Ibrahim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamilah – Ruba & Luna Ibrahim. Them and their team share their story with us below.

Please kick things off for us – where does this story begin?
Sisters, Ruba and Luna, born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, were inspired by their mother as successful Arabic singer with great passion for music. Ruba and Luna had a very wealthy yet strict lifestyle. Where music was forbidden, they were only allowed to enjoy music as a hobby, it was the typical “you will be Drs and lawyers” their father would say. Until the ages of 17 and 16, when their father lost 19 million in the stock market, this is when life changed, the shock of their father’s misfortune caused him a heart attack the same day! This day was a life turning point for this family! Their father began to lose his wealth, all of it. As they began to lose their homes, cars, businesses, their father had second heart attack, “as we sat with him as he recovered from surgery, he began to open up and tell us that if we want to make music he supports us and wants us to be happy.” We then began our pursuit to work on music in hopes to also be able to take care of our family.

After many failed attempts and false promises, Ruba 1/2 of the group, decided to step back and work on a career where financial gain was instant, seeing as our family was in need. Luna struggled to continue the journey without her sister because her ultimate dream was to do music with her other half. However, she did continue again with many failed attempts and false promises. She then began to give up and decided to give it one more shot and put a cover out. She contacted Jacob Huizar, an amazing videographer, rented out a small space in downtown LA and recorded her first cover to put out to the public. The cover striked the attention of Jordan Omley, from the production company “The jam”, who has worked with some of the biggest artists and developed some of the biggest names. Luna got a DM from Jordan asking to meet, so we set a day and time.

In the meeting, Luna was just boasting about Ruba and how talented she is and explaining that she did take a step down to work. Jordan was instantly fascinated and contacted Ruba on a separate occasion to come in and meet with Luna at the second meeting with no explanation exactly to why. In the meeting he explained that he would like to see us together and work with both of us as a group. Luna looking at Ruba, Jordan asks Ruba do you really wanna do this, and she instantly began to cry, explaining that she never thought an opportunity would come to her like this and it killed her that she had to give up and she just felt so blessed. The chemistry was an instant, our first song was so fluid and just worked. After recording a few songs, we knew this was a team for us and they also felt we were a fit for their production company! We are now signed to “The Jam” working endlessly to share our story with the perfect team by our side. We have recently dropped.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been anything but a smooth road, but these girls will stop at nothing to make their dreams as artists come true and hope to inspire others to do the same. Ruba and Luna have been pursuing their music career the day they were given their family blessings over ten years in! They have learned the industry raw! The good, the bad, the ugly! Doors have been shut, dreams have been promised, “sometimes, you were lucky to even have a consistent team deliver on their promises” sometimes it was as simple as not having money to fund your project. “We are grateful for every experience, it has and will continue to mold us as strong driven women who will stop at nothing to make it happen!

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
“We are best friends, and even luckier, we are sisters! A duo! We make music to empower and build independence in the people. We use our real-life experiences and express them through our music. We are so proud of how far we have come, although a long road ahead, we have come to see that all things are possible!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing! Every single experience has taught us a lesson worth learning in the music industry. Who we are today as individuals and as artists is because of personal experiences, it’s all in God’s timing, and we are grateful for our journey, potholes and all!
