Meet Jacob Atmodjojo of Wedding Factories in East Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Atmodjojo.

Jacob, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my company as wedding and event photography and video. Throughout the years, I came to weddings and events, I looked at how the wedding and event productions (decorations, flowers, lighting, DJ, etc.) there have not been any significant creative changes happenings for the last 10 years, vs. photography and video, there’re huge difference in artistic style.

I see same decorations, same way of grand entrance, people copying each other flowers design, plain lighting and efx at weddings. The point is, it’s quite boring.

How about nice and well-designed wedding, a conceptualize event, design by one team. All team members talk to each other (instead of 1 wedding planner hiring different vendors and each vendor do their best thing, but the whole cohesiveness of design depends on the wedding planner, who typically produce typical works for their clients, i.e. boring).

With my background as art director (advertising) from my school in Art Center, Pasadena, I started wedding factories, where the goal is to challenge, could we do our brides and grooms wedding “one of a kind”, from save the date card, invitation, the whole decoration (flowers, lighting, etc.), DJ, even detail of cake.

The point is we want our bride and groom to feel that their wedding is special. It’s their day, it’s their wedding, it should feel original to them. Their personality. Their story. And not copying someone else’s.

And since all team is under 1 roof, we want to work with affordable budget that’s realistic. Our slogan is marriage is hard, weddings are not. We want to make point to our brides and grooms, most important is about the 2 of them getting married, the whole wedding is the icing on the cake. What comes after the wedding day is their “marriage” and that’s the most important thing. I saw lots of couples fighting over details of wedding. Or they bankrupt themselves trying to make “luxury” wedding. They missing the point, they got to the point of planning of the wedding date because they “love” each other, to see them arguing about details and how the groom wants differ from how the bride wants, kind of heartbreaking.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s not always a smooth road. Problems are always there. Trying to do best works and at limited budget is quite challenging. We thrive to outperform our services and works from our past works. We do our best to squeeze the budget to match our bride and groom’s budget. And cutting certain budget from unnecessary expense to fulfill better needs, sometimes quite challenging to convince brides and grooms.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Wedding Factories story. Tell us more about the business.
We at Wedding Factories, we provide one stop wedding productions. We do photography and video, invitations (conceptual and letterpress printing), flower design, lighting + EFX, set design (drape and vintage furniture), outfits rental (for photo shoot and video).

We specialize in creating a conceptual wedding design and one of a kind wedding experience. We meet our brides and grooms, trying to figure out who they are, what’s their story, what’s unique about them. Then we design their wedding. For example, we have bride and groom who loves comic con, so we design their save the date and invitation, photo shoot, video same day edit, lighting efx in the theme of “DC comics Superman and Lois Lane”. We made their wedding invitation in the shape of comics with story of how the bride and groom grow up, meet each other, got engaged and with the last page of please come to the wedding invitation message. Packaged in a clear plastic with backing white cardboard 1/2 perforated as map, 1/2 RSVP postcard. All of these backed with our own photography works as well. We do opening grand entrance with creating Superman/Lois lane (who portrays by the bride and groom) and we end the wedding banquet with same day edit that’s part of “Superman and Lois Lane Adventure” as well. The lighting efx and logo was displaying classical DC Comics, which was redesigned as the bride and groom initial instead.

I believe, when it comes to smallest detail of the production, there’s no other wedding production studio out there that do so many under 1 roof. There’re a lot of shops saying we do this, that, and etc., but how good the works? My team and I, we are equally good in everything that we do, and for 1 roof studio to contains all these services (photo, video, invitations, flower, lighting + efx, set design, drape, and outfits rentals), I would say, we cover almost everything needed in weddings.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
There’s no luck (good or bad), just hard works. And striving to be the best. To be different. Today’s best works is just 2nd best to tomorrow’s work. That’s our attitude. We don’t count on good luck or bad luck.
