Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Hua.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The beginning of our story started when I was in my 2nd year at business school from University of Hawaii. I coincidently discovered the business idea after a phone-call with my parent. Lei, my mother, who is in her mid-60s and completed her maxillary or upper jaw implant in California. During our conversation, her voice sounds strange and very distressing with a continuous throttling pain over the landline. I found out that her implant took months along with multiple trips visiting her dentist, unfortunately. This was a significant problem, as a result, facing the dental industry and patients like my mom or baby boomers are being affected with the long turnaround time to get their restoration or implant done. This particular problem became personal to me and immediately I was on an electrifying journey to bring best practices from proven business cases to this industry. I had collaborated with my professors for advice and gain insights from industry experts. Within less than a year, my co-founder, Henry Nguyen, joined the cause and we officially launched Dentalaborate in February of this year to democratize same day restoration for dentists providing a new health service for their patients.
Has it been a smooth road?
I was a former Army captain in special operation with multiple deployments to Afghanistan. So, adapting and figuring out solutions to very tough problem sets were common to me. Starting a new business is never a smooth road, however. It is the small incremental wins that help morale and the “will” to keep on moving forward during tough times. Falling in love with your product and not willing to be an agent of change are detrimental to a business. It is a sign that you’re not willing to adapt to most current situation or the needs of the patient. Our team learnt quickly to adopt customer feedbacks into our online platform along with our business features. Also, it helps a lot when you’ve a good co-founder who is willing to be a part of the ups and downs from this wild roller coaster ride. We always try to make sure our customers or dentists are satisfied with our product experience, to include receiving crowns on time, ensuring proper fitting with crowns, and obtaining high quality denture works. All of these are really important to us because we candidly care about their practices and patient’s satisfaction.

Dentalaborate is an alternative solution for enabling dentists to offer same day restoration for patients. Basically, we are online platform allowing dentists to book a date and time to get their orders ranging from eMax, Impress, to Bruxzir crowns. We concentrate in case management process by designing digital cases and working closely with our milling partners to ensure our doctors are able to get their crowns or bridges within the same day. From the patient and dentist perspectives, this is very innovative because all of the restoration can be done within a single day. Using our platform really free up time for patient with busy schedule as well as reduce the number of visits or days to dental practices. Most importantly, we are able to save our doctors from purchasing a CADCAM system where the upfront cost for a full-system is roughly $100,000 USD despite the impeccable steep learning curve.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We original started in Los Angeles because it is a great city for new entrepreneurs to get real market feedback. This location has one of highest number of dental practices per population in California. For us, the demand for dental restoration is very high in this city compared to other cities in southern California. Having a great and nice smile means a lot in this city. As of today, our operations are from Los Angeles to San Diego. We are looking to expand to northern California in the near future. LA is a perfect location to start where the culture and diversity are rich. People are constantly willing to try new things around here. But location will likely depend on the nature of the business for any entrepreneurs.
