Meet Hollywood Photographer: Victor Saint James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Saint James.

Victor Saint, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started photography as a hobby, mostly taking photos of my son. I started sharing them, and family and friends would tell me how good they are. I would just assume they were being nice, but I kept shooting more, and they would keep saying the same thing. I started getting friends wanting me to take some photo for them. and soon after I starting pursuing photography on the side.

Has it been a smooth road?
I really didn’t know how to begin, I didn’t think I would pursue photography as a job. I started looking at tutorials, and little by little I learned different styles and techniques that work for me.

Some of the challenges were not having the equipment to try different things. I just had a basic camera one lens and in camera flash. I just had to decide if photography was something I wanted to pursue, and so I began getting more equipment to help me achieve greater images.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
The proudest moment was when I started building confidence. There was doubt in my head, that what I was doing, was not good enough but all I could do was keep going, and keep shooting.

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
Once I felt that photography could be a business, I thought since friends like my photos, that I would get clients right away. That was not always the case. I didn’t know what my target clients would be or what to expect thinking the hard part was over, learning to take good images, but I still had to learn how to market myself and find ways for people to see my work.

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
I believe the city of Los Angeles is a great place for my business, this city has incredibly diverse people from all over the world, a great city for creative types. I can never stop learning. For that reason alone, I would recommend Los Angeles for anyone wanting to take their talent to the next level.
