Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Lewis.
Casey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always liked the idea of taking pictures but I never acted on it until later in life. I first got the bug working as a recording engineer in a major Los Angeles studio. After working with famed recording engineer, Eddie Kramer (Zeppelin, Hendrix, Rolling Stones) and seeing his photographs documenting recording sessions, it inspired me to do the same with the bands I was working with. A little later on, as I was getting burned out recording, I was given the opportunity to handle all the social media and in-house creative direction for a small indie label. This included creating all the online and print content for the handful of bands we were working with. I was doing everything from behind-the-scenes photos and video of recording sessions, doing press photos, and shooting live gigs. From there it just spiraled into me shooting other bands and contributing to several music blogs, eventually taking over my life.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never an easy road, especially when pursuing a career in a creative field like photography. There are SO MANY people taking photos these days and in music photography, it seems to be even more competitive. It’s all about finding your voice, staying true to what you do, and consistently putting out quality work.
What role has luck had in your life and career?
I really don’t like to think that luck, good or bad, has anything to do with my career. It’s really about all the hard work and perseverance. The opportunities I’ve been given to work with a lot of the clients I’ve had has been a direct result of putting the work in, building relationships, and the ability to recognize and seize the opportunity as it’s presented.
Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
The one thing that I’ve been told over and over again, is how easy I am to work with. I know most people don’t like having their picture taken, I certainly don’t, so I really try to make the experience as comfortable and painless as possible.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I have a love/hate relationship with Los Angeles. Having grown up here my whole life, it’s easy to take the city for granted. While some people complain that there really isn’t a proper city center, I think it’s exactly that, that makes L.A. so unique. While some cities have a few blocks dedicated to different cultures, we have entire neighborhoods. I love the fact that I can start my day with a morning hike in the mountains, shoot in Downtown during the day, and end up riding my bike on the beach at sunset. As for my dislikes, I really like the idea of having seasons, I’m so tired of having it be 80 degrees on Christmas…
