Meet Highland Park / El Sereno Makeup Artist: Julie Curl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Curl.  She is a true artist at heart and it shows in every conversation with this rising star.  Below you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with her.

Julie, please share your story with us.  How did you get to where you are today?

As a child I was always fascinated by anything creative and that fascination has stuck with me my whole life. There are tons of polaroids of me painting, you could always find me with art medium at my grasp. Oddly enough, I never thought becoming a make-up artist would be my career choice. Growing up I wanted to be a music journalist since writing was my passion, and make-up was always something I loved doing, but never dreamt of it actually being my career. My first glimpse at make-up was flipping through my mother’s magazine and being in awe with different variations of make-up and the way it truly transformed each individual. Likewise with special effects, I was a horror fanatic and intrigued with the amazing things that can be created using special effects! The more gore the better! In college, I flipped around with plenty of career choices from journalism to photography, and finally I deiced to take a chance in the make-up industry. Make Up Designory was my school of choice, and it was there where I learned to hone my craft in both beauty and special effects. As a Freelance Make-Up Artist I’m constantly trying to get my name out there, and continuing to grow as an artist. It has been a fun journey thus far and I can’t wait to see what other opportunities it has in store!

What are your plans for the future?

As far as my plans for the future, I want to keep growing as an artist and continue to get my name out there in the industry. I do have aspirations to one day start my own cosmetic line, but that would be further in the future!

Let’s dig a little deeper into your story.  What was the hardest time you’ve had?

I think the hardest time in my career would definitely be accepting that some months you’ll be extremely busy, and others will be quite slow. There are so many make-up artists in Los Angeles, which is awesome, but that also creates tons of competition for jobs. I think that is what pushes me to try to set myself apart from other artists and also pushes me creatively. Or there are times when things do not go as plan with my make-ups, but I’ve learned to roll with it and always manage to make it work and the end result turns out great. Sometimes those are the moments you end up discovering new techniques; you’re constantly learning new ways to do things as an artist.
