Today we’d like to introduce you to Guillermo Maldonado.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I immigrated from Peru in 1998 looking for better opportunities. After trying some low level jobs, I landed in the mail room of a mortgage lender in Irvine. I climbed my way up, learning enough to open my own office of loan processing, until the crash of 2008.
A friend of mine brought me this brochure of a water treatment company that was looking for sales reps and, as I was still trying to survive in the mortgage industry, started working for them selling water purifiers and these “alkaline water” ionizers.
Until that moment, I hadn’t heard about alkaline water before. I started drinking the water and my almost lifetime gastritis disappeared in about a month.
As my work in the mortgage industry was getting better, I decided to leave this water company but keep selling the alkaline units on my own. I found a local manufacturer and started buying wholesale and selling retail.
My idea was to keep the pricing as low as possible (having a main job in the mortgage industry helped me) to make it affordable for as many people as possible, I decided to keep the business online and by referral only, to avoid having office and big advertising expenses, while offering personalized customer service.
Now, I have a decent customer database, growing every day, while maintaining the original idea of keeping the price as low as possible and close relationship with my customers.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Main obstacle I found was educating people about the benefits of the water, without compromising my integrity.
There are some companies out there saying that this water will cure any illness including cancer, which is not true. This water is just healthier that tap, and even purified water, that’s all; so it’s like choosing a salad instead of a greasy burger, or fruit juice instead of soda.

My business is essentially a family business, I like to keep it that way in order to maintain low price and personalized customer service. My wife and I are the only employees and do all my ads in social media and my website.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Starting a new business, especially with a little-known product is a real challenge.
More people is going to say “no” that you ever expected, keep it up!
Keep your promises, don’t forget about your customer’s needs.
Never, never offer something that you won’t be able to deliver.
Do not get discouraged by not having the success that others are having, as long as you can sleep at night.
