Today we’d like to introduce you to Guile Branco.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started acting when I was 17 years old and still in Brazil. I remember I was a big fan of American movies, and would often see myself act out in parts – even before I knew what acting actually was. I started modeling at 16 and realized the same school I was doing the “runway thing” had an adjacent acting course so I enrolled a year later. I still remember fondly my first teacher introducing me to the Stanislavsky method and stage acting. I had finally found my calling. Back when I first started acting, I was still pursuing an academic life. Theater was occupying a great part of my lifestyle, but I had finally gotten into law school and found myself extremely unhappy. My father was a professor and scientist with multiple PhDs so for him, academia was the only way to succeed in life. So the pressure was on!
For about six months, I was torn trying to make a decision – and fortunately for me, I quit. Another factor is that I was already planning a move to New York City, and realized I was just wasting my time. No regrets. My father obviously was disappointed, but in seeing me work in different plays and also soap operas he started to slowly accept me as I wanted to be. And then I got the opportunity of a lifetime when I found a job as an interpreter in New York, which made me move right away. I didn’t know exactly how I would segway from that back into acting, but I followed my gut and things started to happen as I started to network with the right people. I ended up spending five years in New York City, years in which after many independent films and theater, the west coast started calling. I moved to Los Angeles 12 years ago and couldn’t be happier. Right away I started producing my first film – a documentary called “WHY WE TRAIN” and that’s when I created BRIGHTKNIGHT ENTERTAINMENT. It was initially created as a vehicle to my acting – but eventually we grew.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. Specially from a different country at first, and then to another coast. Main struggle was how to support myself, and after many months working odd jobs such as “bathroom attendant” and “coat rack guy” I finally devised a plan. Since young age, I had a connection to fitness and even had been a bench press champion at my local town. Even before my very first year in Manhattan, I created my first own business: personal training – helping people achieve their fitness goals. That allowed to me be flexible with my schedule so I could really focus on acting. Upon moving to Los Angeles, it was obvious that that same business would help keeping my afloat. Besides the financial end – as a young early twenties guy that I was when moving to a strange town, I had to deal with the challenge of meeting the right people.
Of course, at times I got into trouble BUT mostly I have been successful on that arena. Instinct must be followed, and I was able to garner such amazing friendships on both coasts, and that, is the most important thing in my life. BrightKnight Entertainment has been not only helpful to myself, but I have been able to help some fellow actors as I am always actively trying to produce more films. Right now BrightKnight Entertainment has a long track record dating back to 2008, that’s when I produced the documentary “Why We Train” and after that we have produced many scripted independent films and web series.
Please tell us about BrightKnight Entertainment.
BrightKnight Entertainment produces movies! I love the fact that, as an actor myself with a very creative mind – I get to create stories, I get to write and produce and for me that’s very exciting. It’s a company by actors for actors – we try to elevate our friends, as we live in a very competitive town. I am proud to still run this company 11 years later!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Obviously, we want to grow as a company. Right now, I am involved with filmmaking in Brazil – my native country – and eventually we want to be producing on both coasts and in the southern hemisphere. My latest film as an actor is “Cowboy Heart” and was released in Brazil in over 200 cinemas in around 80 cities. Directed by Gui Pereira, who is one of our clients at BrightKnight Entertainment and this is the biggest project we are involved in. Keep an eye out for Gui Pereira, he is going places!
