Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Brutti and Erin Lutz.
Erin and Gina met in college at Long Beach State and it was love at first sight. They became fast friends who both shared an interest in fitness and business. During college, Gina began training to become a Pilates instructor and Erin loved the work she saw her friend doing and thought “I want to do that also!” After completing her training, Erin joined Gina as an instructor at ShapeShift Pilates in Redondo Beach and they have been teaching together ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road, but we’ve definitely hit a sweet spot now. When we first began teaching our schedules were very scattered. We might teach for an hour at one studio and then another hour at a different studio then back to the first studio for one more hour. Being a successful Pilates instructor requires you to be flexible with your time, open to last minute changes, and to always say yes. It can be a tough career choice for some, but Erin and Gina worked very hard to develop a loyal and dedicated clientele. It seemed like the perfect transition and the logical next step to purchase ShapeShift Pilates from its owner when she decided to retire in 2018.
Please tell us about ShapeShift Pilates.
We are a Pilates studio that focuses not just on fitness, but on rehab. Our clients come from very diverse backgrounds- some have worked out their entire life and are looking for something to push them to that next level while others are just getting started for the very first time. We help people who are recovering from back surgery, knee replacements, torn rotator cuffs and poor alignment.
Pilates is unique because it’s not just about what you do in the studio, it’s about learning how to make your body function most efficiently outside the studio. We teach our clients how to lift things properly, how to stand correctly and how proper breathing can have a healing effect on injuries. These are skills you cannot learn in a typical gym environment.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
Erin and Gina have both had amazing instructors and mentors throughout the years. But they can really credit Pilates Sports Center in Encino as their inspiration to get to this new phase of business ownership. Both Erin and Gina did their Master Training Certification through PSC, a wonderfully successful studio owned by two girlfriends. Erin and Gina saw what they were doing and thought- that’s what we want for ourselves. This is what the South Bay needs.
