Today we’d like to introduce you to G Bass.
G, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My DJ journey began officially in the winter of 2012, in Elkhart. Indiana when I went half with my parental units on a Traktor S2 controller. (Yeah, that long ago. company doesn’t even exist anymore). I don’t think they expected it to develop into the obsession I have today, so it was fairly easy to convince them, but it would end up eventually being a point of contention. haha
For the next 1.5 years while at college, in Ohio I would begin to hone my skills by doing Greek life parties, fundraisers and more. DJing became a necessary way to express myself and provide release for me, after I injured myself and could no longer run Track; my primary mode of somatic release. It also gave me a way to participate in social environments, without feeling the pressure to directly socialize, as I am a pretty introverted and awkward as fvck creature.
In the spring of 2014, I officially dropped out of college to return home, needing to reassess my choice in Majors (History and Social Sciences; YES, I know. But I love history. It just doesn’t have a lot of job choices, even with a degree), and losing much of the financial aid/scholarships I had earned by applying as a student-athlete.
Family was also in the midst of a divorce, so I felt it better to be at home until the dust settled.
In October of 2014, I flew out to CA with what I thought were the “coolest” clothes in my closet, tightly packed around my Traktor S2 controller (since I couldn’t afford a flight case at the time) in the midst of a family emergency.
I have been out here ever since, pursuing a career in the activity I now love the most. One of my first experiences that fall was DJing a house party at SBCC, and it honestly changed my life. I was an absolute nobody, and being given the space to provide the vibes for a party in CA being so freshly new to the state was an amazing foundation setting moment for me. I was originally playing EDM Trap with Hip-Hop, RnB and other genres and top Electro House vibes mixed in.
During next decade, I would move from couch crashing in Santa Barbara(looking for walking distance jobs with an old HS friend who had moved there a year prior), to Escondido, living with my uncle, “Fresh Prince” style, then moving out with my family to Murrieta, to then being kicked out and staying on my own with roommates in the nearby city of Wildomar.
In that time, I would work part-time jobs, at restaurants, bars and anywhere else, while looking for leads on the nightlife in SoCal to be able to play more House music and less mainstream genres. I also took on the career of Wedding DJ adjacent to my part-time jobs, which lent greatly to my development(until it didn’t-got illegally termed in 2024 and decided to officially retire from it) and allowed me to make some extra money while looking for a line into SoCal’s underground.
I think around, 2016? I came across Space Taco in Pomona, and that was one of my first experiences coming in touch with the club culture and music scene that existed out here on the West Coast.
Since 2016, I have worked endlessly to match the pace of the talent I have come across in my journey and studies, undertaking production, undergoing multiple evolutions in presentation, sound and character, as well as marketing and continuing to pursue this as a career until it is financially sustainable for me in a healthy way. Now-a-days, I have had the pleasure of playing after-parties, Pride and a variety of events in LA and the surrounding cities and even some states, with some of the most prolific talent this side of the US has to offer, perhaps, even, the next generation of music artists.
I never even really expected to even get this far, but I guess a lot can happen when you’re insanely stubborn. lol
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, but I don’t think anything worth pursuing ever is, or should be a “smooth road”. Any part of this that has been a struggle has been something I have learned from.
To name a few, without delving into hour long stories:
Death of Family
The stigma from family, friends, relatives, and, particularly parents for having an unconventional career choice
Car issues
Financial Issues
Dealing with Imposter Syndrome
Dealing with the social and political issues of the music scene, first as a Black “male”, then again as a Black gender non-conforming/trans individual.
Lack of Sleep/Rest
Work/Life/Career Balance
Code Switching and Corporate/Wedding World Politics
There’s probably more I’m forgetting, but yah
To be honest though, I feel like a lot of these things everyone deals with at one point in developing their own career or becoming more “themselves”. So, nothing exclusive, but I do have some pretty crazy stories haha.
Liike, driving to Vegas, playing a set from 12-1, then leaving Vegas at 2 AM to drive back to CA to DJ a wedding the same day, among others lol.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I consider myself a DJ first and foremost but a creator. I specialize in pressing buttons to blending tracks together, creating new sounds to illicit emotional and physical reactions from people in settings where it can be a healing magik. I also like to create distortions of sound of my own.
I am proud to have a very long career and to have been able to pursue it for so long.
Most recently, I’ve been excited to share that I performed most recently at Los Angeles Pride.
An amazing time with wonderful beautiful faces, and the largest crowd I’ve had the pleasure of partying with so far.
What sets me apart from others?
I guess, and something that took me forever to learn, and I KNOW its going to sound cliché`; but is being myself.
And being entirely comfortable with it.
I asked to pursue this journey, and the universe has seen it fit to put me through the experiences that brought me to now, and the development of my character that came from such. I am grateful.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
See, now this is where I’d most likely consider myself as stubborn, but lets call it tenacity instead. lol
I just, never want to stop doing this I guess? I consider myself a bit of a dog with a bone of sorts.
I’m having way too much fun and the journey has been ‘nova so far.
I want to keep learning and getting better as much as I can until I physically can’t anymore.
