Meet Ella Stichler of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ella Stichler

Hi Ella, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in San Diego, California, where I started dancing at two years old. I explored various styles, from tap and jazz to hip-hop, lyrical, and ballet. At age five, I took up Irish dancing and, by age nine, I was one of the youngest open champions in my region.

When I entered middle school, I wanted to get back into tap, jazz, and hip-hop, but dance classes were expensive. I remember expressing my frustration to my mom about wanting to perform in recitals rather than just taking lessons. That conversation led her to suggest I try theater, where I could dance and perform all the time. I joined the local theater group, CYT, and immediately felt at home on stage.

As I immersed myself in theater, I realized I wanted to explore more than just dance. I signed up for acting and singing lessons, joined my school’s choir and drama program, and discovered a passion for the full range of theatrical skills. The arts, especially acting, became my refuge and my favorite way to express myself.

In high school, I started auditioning for larger roles in plays and musicals. I performed in 15 productions from the age of 11 until I graduated. When it came time to choose a college major, I was torn between pursuing theater and exploring other creative avenues. I also knew I wanted to try something or go somewhere completely new, where I could be pushed outside of my comfort zone and learn more about myself away from the comforts of home. I attended the University of Alabama, majoring in Film and Entertainment Studies so I could learn the ins and outs of the film industry, while also studying Communications and Advertising/Public Relations.

Navigating this path was challenging, especially since no one in my family had pursued a career in film or in the industry at all. I wanted to understand what directors and producers sought behind the scenes so I could enhance my work as an actor. During my studies, I acted in student films and gained valuable experience in writing, directing, and producing, which broadened my perspective on the craft.

Despite being told that I needed a “real job,” I felt a strong pull toward this industry. After graduating, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting and crew work. I quickly found that most of my opportunities were in front of the camera, which sort of made the decision for me, and the last of the puzzle pieces sort of all fell into place. Acting has always been what I’ve dreamed of pursuing, I just never thought I would have the means or opportunities to be who I am. In the past year, I’ve been lucky enough to work on 12 projects.

Now SAG-eligible, I continue to seek out roles that resonate with audiences. My understanding of the production process, combined with my commitment to storytelling, drives me as a performer. I’m excited to collaborate with creative individuals in this industry and am looking forward to what’s next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I consider myself incredibly fortunate. I have a supportive family and the opportunity to live in Los Angeles while pursuing my dreams—an experience I truly cherish. However, one of the biggest challenges I face in this industry is the feeling of inadequacy. It’s tough when you hear that if you haven’t “made it” yet, you’re somehow not a real actor. The constant questions of “What will you do if this doesn’t work out?” can be exhausting. I remind myself that I’d rather strive for my dreams and find joy in the journey than never try at all.

For many creatives, the biggest obstacle can be our own self-doubt. Additionally, moving to a new city on my own and managing my finances for the first time has been a significant adjustment. To support myself while pursuing my passion, I juggle multiple jobs. My “day job” is in marketing and media for a finance company, and I also handle social media and email marketing for a life coach, an acting studio, and a commercial mortgage firm. To make ends meet, I work as a substitute teacher for the LA Unified School District.

While these roles are rewarding, I’m always striving for opportunities that truly fulfill me, even if they aren’t always financially compensated. Balancing these responsibilities can be challenging, but I’m committed to pursuing what I love while navigating this journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Although my day-to-day work in marketing may seem different from my pursuits in film, I’ve found that it enriches my creative journey. In my marketing role, I manage and create websites, develop content for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, and craft email marketing campaigns. I’ve also begun incorporating podcasting and client interview videos into my projects, which allows me to blend creativity with strategy.

Since moving to LA, my growth as a person and an artist has been profound. I’ve become more vulnerable and courageous, allowing myself to fully experience my emotions and make bold choices I once hesitated to pursue. My training in both theater and on-camera acting has given me the versatility to thrive in various contexts. I’ve had the privilege of studying under exceptional artists and teachers, mastering techniques such as Meisner, Chekhov, and Stanislavski, as well as working with the imagination, which has encouraged me to take risks and explore new emotional, physical, and vocal dimensions in my performances.

In addition to acting, singing, and dancing, I’ve also written two short films and a feature film, which I hope to bring to life in the future. What sets me apart is my ability to merge my marketing expertise with my passion for storytelling, allowing me to approach projects with a unique perspective. I take pride in my commitment to continuous growth, both as a performer and a creative professional.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is loving and supporting others. In a world filled with division and controversy, I believe it’s essential to create projects that not only entertain but also inspire and uplift. I strive to bring light into our communities and foster connection, emphasizing the importance of lifting each other up rather than tearing one another down.
