Meet Ek Darkurai of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ek Darkurai

Hi EK, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My Name is EK Darkurai, I am an artist and music producer based in Los Angeles, California. I was born in Japan to Chinese parents and moved to the United States at the age of 15. Having lived in three different countries has gained me a unique perspective that deeply influences my music and creative vision.

My journey in music started in middle school when I began learning piano and music theory, which helped me build a strong foundation for my future career. Determined to take my passion to the next level, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams and studied at the Los Angeles College of Music, where I earned a degree in Music Production.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with talented artists, Grammy-winning songwriters, and engineers, constantly pushing my creative boundaries

With my diverse background, technical expertise, and global influences, I continue to carve out my place in the music industry, bringing fresh and innovative sounds to the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started off making beats on my own, just focusing on the sound, but over time, I’ve grown into a more well-rounded producer. Now, I’m able to communicate with artists, understand their vision, and bring out the best in them. It’s not something that happened overnight—it’s the result of years of struggle, working through challenges, and learning how to connect with different artists. Through this process, I’ve learned how to create a space where artists can shine and express themselves fully. My background, coming from an Asian heritage, adds another layer to how I approach collaboration. I bring a unique perspective, shaped by my cultural influences, which allows me to work with artists in ways that are distinct and fresh. Being able to merge these experiences has truly helped me evolve into a real producer, someone who understands both the craft and the human side of music.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in music production, focusing on urban music, R&B, electronic, hip-hop, and Afrobeat, and now I’m also establishing myself as an artist. I’m proud of the journey I’ve taken, especially the opportunity to work with incredible artists, including Grammy-winning artists and songwriters. As an artist, I released my single Done Talking, which went No. 7 on China’s Douyin (TikTok) charts, gained over 50 million streams in China, and surpassed 2 million streams in the U.S. Reaching that level was a major milestone for me, and it reinforced my passion for both producing and performing. Looking back, I’m truly grateful for everything that’s led me to where I am today—the collaborations, the struggles, and the growth. It’s all part of the process, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my family and friends. From the very beginning, even before I had anything to show for my work, they believed in me. Their support wasn’t just emotional—it was also financial at times, helping me stay afloat when I was just starting out. Pursuing a career in music isn’t easy, and there were moments when doubt crept in, but having people who truly believed in me kept me going. Whether it was encouragement, advice, or just being there through the ups and downs, their support has meant everything. I’m beyond grateful for them standing by me through this journey.

I also have to give credit to all the artists I’ve worked with. Their trust in my work has played a huge role in my growth as both a producer and an artist. Having artists believe in my vision, collaborate with me, and create together has been invaluable. Every session, every project has helped shape me into the musician I am today. Their talent and dedication push me to keep evolving, and I’m grateful for every opportunity to bring ideas to life with them. It’s a blessing to work with people who inspire me just as much as I hope to inspire them.
