Meet Drew Scollon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Scollon.

Hi Drew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
FINDING INSPIRATION IN EVERY TURN.

Inspired by the life-changing power of riding a Onewheel, my mission is to share the incredible experience with as many people as possible.

I fell in love with snowboarding at a very young age, and when I discovered the Onewheel in 2019, I immediately fell in love all over again. It wasn’t very long before I realized that the Onewheel wasn’t just another toy but an awesome machine that had literally changed my life. The Onewheel experience was so beneficial for me that I started to think about how much it could help others struggling with mental health conditions like depression and PTSD in the same way that surf therapy has.

Once I got this idea in my head, I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Someone needed to be out there actively sharing this experience with others, teaching people how to ride Onewheels in a safe and responsible manner, providing a fun new activity for experiential therapy and group events like birthdays, bar mitzvahs, and corporate team building, and just giving people the opportunity to experience the magic of riding a Onewheel before making the financial commitment of buying one.

When the covid pandemic hit and I was lost my job at Nordstrom, I turned that into an opportunity to make this dream a reality. Now I’m sharing the stoke of riding a Onewheel with as many people as possible 🤙

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The main thing I’ve struggled with has been marketing. It’s a very niche market and most people don’t even know what a Onewheel is let alone that this type of service exists, so no one is really searching for this type of thing. I’ve spent a lot of money on Facebook and Instagram ads and paying for advertising on Yelp, with minimal returns. This year my efforts have finally started to pay off. I’ve done some big events with middle schools, sober living homes and drug rehabs providing a new type of experiential therapy, and I’m starting to get booked more for birthday parties and bar mitzvahs. Now that Onewheels are becoming more popular, I have a feeling that this is going to be a big year for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I worked for Nordstrom for a long time as a salesman and manager, but when the pandemic hit, that came to an end pretty quickly. That’s when I started working on launching Floatified. When everything opened up again last year, I started serving at a restaurant in Santa Monica at night and working on Floatified during the day. I love working with people and sharing the experience of riding Onewheels with others. I’m proud of the business I’ve built and I’m excited to watch it grow.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Riding a Onewheel is a lot easier than it looks. It is a self-balancing device that responds to your movements so it is really easy to control with just a little bit of practice and proper instruction. I’ve taught everyone from 4-year-old girls to 70-year-old men and most people get the hang of it within 20 minutes.
