Today we’d like to introduce you to Darielle Rose.
Darielle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I moved to Los Angeles from Massachusetts, I was nineteen and didn’t know a soul. I was so eager to experience a new beginning, it was exhilarating to embrace a life in a big city, 3,000 miles away from home. I had done my research and knew I wanted to attend Makeup Designory. Originally my heart was set on NYC, but at the time, that branch was still being built, so sunny LA it was! Shortly after graduating in 2005 from their JourneyMan Program, I booked my first television show, “The Tim and Eric Show” on Cartoon Network. Twelve years later, I have been blessed to have worked every medium with makeup. From swimsuit photo shoots in exotic locations, television, reality shows, theatre, commercials, short films, feature films, runway shows, headshots, weddings, proms and private events, (all of which have allowed me to travel!) Through these jobs, big or small, working for trade, free or a very decent amount – I’ve taken away something from each person I’ve touched, (literally). That is truly what this profession means to me. Connecting with another soul. Exchanging energy with that perfect stranger in your chair. It’s an intimate art.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been an easy road. The first day on “The Tim and Eric Show” was when those nerves kicked in. It was a feeling I’ll never forget, “fake it til you make it” seemed like a life mantra. I will say this, schooling can never prepare you enough for the reality of set life! There is nothing quite like the rush of fighting time, collaborating with a production and enduring long hours. It may be difficult, but it is addicting making movie magic happen!
I learned so much through trial and error and the first five years of my career consisted of testing my abilities and talent. I have sadly burned bridges and I have been burned also, all lessons that needed to take place for growth to occur. When I was twenty, someone told me it would take a good ten years to “make it”. That seemed like far too long to wait. Of course, back then I thought I knew everything. I did not want to hear that truth. Upon approaching that decade mark, I realized the gravity of that statement. I saw that I had a solid resume, a successful career but most importantly, I had gratitude. If it weren’t for challenging experiences, I could not appreciate the amazing opportunities that I’ve been gifted. Every year has been better and better, constantly changing and taking on the next level. Those difficulties will never disappear. I’ve learned that it’s how you handle them that makes you recognize your own strength. Each and every situation has taught me to own my profession as an artist, be my own boss and to let go of things that aren’t in my control.
What is the most difficult part of what you do?
As a freelance artist, I find that the inconsistencies between jobs is the biggest challenge. Being able to manage a balanced financial plan is important so you are able to be carried through until the next flow of abundance comes in.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Through all the jobs, big or small, working for trade, free or a very decent amount, I’ve taken away something from each person I’ve touched, (literally). That is truly what this profession means to me. Connecting with another soul. Exchanging energy with that perfect stranger in your chair. It’s an intimate art. When you are able to be the person that makes another feel beautiful, comfortable and safe, that is my level of personal success.
Being a freelance artist isn’t easy. I may not have a million Instagram followers, or be signed with a top agency, I’m not even in the union! Yet, I have no doubt that I have abundance always around me because there is work to be had and it is a mindset that the next “random” job, a client that got my number from “so and so” may just be a part of the bigger story. The best part of being a makeup artist is never knowing where I’ll be next. It’s constantly a new view, face and project that will keep me from ever getting bored! In my opinion, that’s the key to living a long, fulfilling life. Experiencing something new every day.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Moving forward, I am grateful to be officially bi-coastal working in NYC and LA. I have had the incredible opportunity of working consistently with James Franco’s production company, Rabbit Bandini from both coasts and other locations as well. All it took was one job to open up an entirely new road for many connections. I also have begun writing my own films, and directing them so I can be in full creative control which is artistically fulfilling for myself.
