Meet Downtown LA Photographer: Crismico Correa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crismico Correa.

Crismico, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started photography at the age of 16 and was always an art student who used different mediums for a form of expression. Photography grew on me and then taught myself to develop a certain style that fit my personality. Over the years I took every opportunity that involved photography to further expand my perspectives of this art style and I am still continuing to learn and evolve.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing was easy, I had to work many odd jobs and at times two jobs at a time to support myself and my path to pursue photography as a career. Whenever I had time for myself, I dedicated my time to master my craft.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Is when I started off as a measly photo intern for this street wear company until eventually, I became the creative director. I was working as an intern with no income for months and wasn’t really looking for any compensation. The experiences I gain from that was all that I needed because it made me better on who I was and it reflected on my work ethic. I had no job at the time as well so all my attention was trying to absorb as much information I could sponge and use that to my advantage. Slowly but surely I got to where I wanted to be. Had full control to be creative and express what I thought was needed at the time for the company.

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
Of course. There were times when I had no money or time for anything. I couldn’t participate what my friends were doing at the time because I was focused on working what I needed to do. I wasn’t getting paid so I didn’t have the opportunities to pursue what I had an interest in as well. But I was focused, I was looking at the bigger picture so in the long run, I can provide myself time to educate myself to further my passion so I made sacrifices. Every now and then I had terrible jobs that I didn’t want to do but I knew it was for the better.

What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
I believe LA is a great city for anyone who is an artist. People here are so creatively witty and extremely gifted with talented minds that inspire others. Myself, an artist, looks to others for inspiration and perspective. Without it, there is no competition, that effort to want and need to be better at what you do. Everyone needs that push that allows them to go out of the box and try something new. The city gives that to people, that push and allows them to speak their minds freely. To express themselves without judgement and I believe people welcome that to see what every what they themselves are capable of.
