Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Hustle.
DJ, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started off doing plays in middle school. Teenage puppy love was the real reason I signed up for plays. The more plays I did, the more I loved being on stage. By the time I reached high school, my B-Boy dance crew started battling to be in music videos and auditioning for dance shows on TV. We made it all the way StarSearch! Soon enough, we were on American Bandstand, Party Machine, and SoulTrain.
Then the industry’s demand for dancers shifted. I started DJ-ing parties and auditioning for commercials and TV shows gained my attention. Eventually, I joined SAG and got hired for national commercials. I found myself enjoying the “Hollywood Hustle” of auditioning during the day. I received great rewards to film commercials casted with Selena Gomez, Howie Long, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Mr. T was incredible. By night, I was DJ-ing parties and events then I stated my DJ Company Hustle Events throughout Southern California.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
People criticized my name: DJ Hustle. Before the word Hustle was accepted in mainstream, pop-culture, it was a word that described a negative behavior. I was asked to change my name several times. Some clients who called me for DJ services declined my services.
The story behind my name is it was given to me by my football coach. I would be all other players on the team in whatever drills we did I always came in first. Since then, I kept it. I go by the name of Hustle on my Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card and as a host, and DJ Hustle on the 1s and 2s.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started out DJing at my mother’s house party in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Compton we moved around a lot. My DJing & acting experience really started happened back at high school, and then while studying in college. I started off performing in stage plays since these were the quickest gigs to come by. But, while working on plays, dance caught My eye and he gradually gravitated towards dancing. At some point much later, I ended up on Soul Train and loved performing in front of the camera. While pursued acting, I joined up with a rock band and started working as their DJ. Check me out on the Netflix show: The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window as Wedding DJ with Kristen Bell, Michael Ealy.
What do you think about happiness?
What make me happy… Seeing others do well, not just others in the business, but people in everyday life do well. I love helping people archive their goals. Someone helped me and I never forgot that.
