Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Gallo.
Hi Diana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion for modeling started when I was a young girl. I always wanted to be a model, but my parents had no idea how to help me navigate the industry. When I went to college, I tried to figure it out on my own—and honestly, I did a lot of things wrong. I put myself in situations that weren’t safe and I didn’t understand the business at all. It wasn’t until I was almost 30 years old that I was finally signed by a legitimate professional modeling agency and began doing real, professional work. Even then, I quickly realized how much I still didn’t know.
That realization became the seed for my studio. When I opened Manhattan Model Studio, my number one intention was to teach people everything I wish I had known when I was starting out. For me, modeling education is about so much more than becoming a professional model. It’s about confidence—how you walk into a room, how you speak, how you carry yourself in social and professional settings. The skills I teach extend far beyond the glamour of modeling.
I opened Manhattan Model Studio in 2019, right before the COVID pandemic hit. I remember feeling incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of my life after retiring from a full-time government job of 28 years, only to have everything come to a sudden halt.
Like so many small business owners, I had to put my plans on hold while the world shut down. It had already been a long journey just to get to the point of opening my studio but I was not going to allow this delay to deter me from my vision of helping aspiring models break into the modeling industry.
For most of my life, modeling was something I did part-time. I worked full-time for the government for 28 years and modeled on the side as a creative outlet. That experience shaped my philosophy: I truly believe people don’t have to limit themselves to one path. You can be a doctor and a model, a lawyer and a model, or pursue any creative avenue alongside a traditional career.
Today, I teach and model full-time. Everything I share is current and relevant to what’s happening right now in Los Angeles—from in-person and self-tape auditions to acting, posing, runway walking, finding the right representation, and identifying red flags and scams. I’m deeply passionate about empowering my clients to be knowledgeable, confident, and aware so they can pursue their dreams safely, successfully, and quickly.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening The Manhattan Model Studio in 2019—just before the pandemic—meant facing immediate uncertainty and delays at a time when I was just beginning to build momentum. I had my curriculum and website ready to go after years of preparation and then all of a sudden, the world stopped. Looking back though I think I needed the pause after working in Downtown Los Angeles every day for 28 years. I think this forced break was good for my soul and has made me a better teacher and business owner.
After spending 28 years in a high-stress government job that left me deeply unhappy and eventually led to health issues, I knew something had to change. I made the decision to step away and fully commit to what I love—teaching modeling and continuing my own work as a model.
While the road has been challenging at times, every obstacle has reinforced my purpose: to empower others with knowledge, confidence, and the tools to pursue their dreams safely and authentically. Listening to my body and trusting my intuition ultimately led me to a life and career that feel aligned, sustainable, and true to who I am.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I believe what distinguishes me from other modeling schools is my commitment to providing personalized attention to my clients and really listening to their needs and desires. Not everyone who contacts me wants to be a professional model. Some times people just want to feel better about themselves and more confident in their line of work, or they want their child to feel empowered at school if they are being bullied or have problems with self-esteem.
For clients who want to break into modeling, I do my best to see that they succeed safely and quickly by ensuring that they are trained in the skills that are required to book jobs such as auditioning technique, posing, and walking. But I also ensure that they understand all aspects of the business side of modeling and show business. This includes teaching them how to stay away from scams and red flags. And lastly, I use my industry connections to help clients secure agency representation and modeling opportunities once they are ready to go.
Above all, my intention and goal is to empower my clients with tools to build their confidence- tools that extend far beyond the realm of modeling and into all areas of life.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
In my experience, having a coach or mentor you genuinely trust is essential—and that belief is at the foundation of how I run Manhattan Model Studio. I take the trust my clients place in me very seriously, especially because I know how vulnerable people can be when they’re first trying to break into the modeling industry.
I always encourage my clients to have real conversations with people who are actively working in the industry, whether that’s professional models or legitimate agents. Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned came simply from being on set and talking with other models about opportunities, representation, and what the trends are.
I also make it a priority to educate my clients on how the business truly works. Reputable agents do not ask for money upfront—agents get paid when you get paid, usually through a commission that typically doesn’t exceed 20%.
I also encourage everyone to do their research using tools like Google and Reddit to check reviews and identify scams and red flags.
