Meet Detra Charlot Walker of Frozencandyland in Carson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Detra Charlot Walker.

Detra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2014, we had a Family Sunday Funday. Where everyone gets together to eat, drink and play games. Simply enjoying each other’s company. Everyone is always responsible for bringing an item for the family to share. So I put my creative mind to work and came up with a blended drink recipe. The recipe consisted of a blended drink with candy on top in a decorative fashion. Everyone loved them and suggested that I sell them. I really didn’t see it to be that great to sell to others. However, my daughter wanted to do an intern in Ghana and needed $5,000 to get there. So I reflected back on the family saying sell the drinks. I began getting all the necessary supplies to start selling the drinks. I also came up with the name Frozencandyland “World’s Most Famous” since it’s a frozen drink topped with candy. On the first day of selling, I made over $1,000.

After a few days of selling Frozencandyland drinks, the name had gotten out there as a must have. My daughter did further research on the intern to later decide that she didn’t want to go anymore. Well needless to say, the demand for Frozencandyland spread like a wildfire so there was no way I could just quit. I then began creating different flavors. The original flavors are green apple, blue raspberry, and watermelon. Since then, several other flavors has been added to the menu. The demand for drinks increased to the point that I started getting requests to be a part of pop-up shops, baby showers, parties, grand openings, etc. Wanting to be known as the “World’s most famous” I began brainstorming on how I could make this a reality. I started an Instagram page for Frozencandyland gaining over 6000 followers many becoming customers. I started making short and long-term goals for the business.

A few of them being, becoming a vendor at the taste of soul where over 350,000 people gather once a year, being a vendor at the la county fair and Orange County fair, and being able to package my product and ship all over the world. In 2019 the best times of Frozencandyland started happening. I signed up to be a Vendor for taste of soul which opened up many roads for Frozencandyland. Frozencandyland had the opportunity to be on Good Day La Channel 11. And was also featured in the Los Angeles Sentinel. Here we are now in 2020 and Frozencandyland has expanded to making and shipping popsicles, pouches and bottles all over the world. With the huge support and encouragement from my Biggest cheerleader, My Husband, Frozencandyland has purchased a party bus that is in the middle of being revamped to travel and serve Customers in all 50 states.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I’ve definitely had some challenges. In the beginning, I only had one blender with 100 cups to make. The blender I originally used didn’t mix well enough. So it took me a little longer to mix. My Uncle Lyndon donated a Ninja Blender to me and it was the best thing since sliced bread. I made so many drinks eventually it gave out on me, however I didn’t give up. I just bought more Ninja blenders. One of the challenges I faced many times while doing parties was keeping the drinks frozen and not melt. I eventually started taking my deep freezer wherever I sold drinks.

Frozencandyland – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Frozencandyland is a company that blends frozen drinks. We cater to adult drinks as well as kids beverages. We are known for our tasty flavors of frozen drinks topped with flavor. Frozencandyland is set apart from others because we use Sugarfree products to blend our frozen drinks. High fructose corn syrup is NEVER used to blend Frozencandyland drinks. I’m extremely proud of what I’ve created because our customers are always satisfied and speak highly of our drinks.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally describe success as Sacrifice, hard work, dedication, along with a lot of patience. I look to surpass any obstacles that say I can’t do it. I always try to prove that All things are possible through Christ.
