Meet Desiree Duffy of Black Chateau Enterprises in Reseda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desireé Duffy.

Desireé Duffy’s early career was in radio as a host, a producer and in promotions. She’s held several marketing and public relations roles in consumer goods, entertainment, and non-profit industries. Her most recent corporate position, prior to launching Black Château Enterprises, was as vice president of a digital marketing agency.

Black Château is an award-winning marketing and public relations agency located in Southern California. It specializes in promoting authors, books, small press, personality brands, and creative individuals from around the world with a full-spectrum of services. The company’s motto is: We believe in storytellers.

Duffy also is the founder of Books That Make You. Books That Make You is a sister company to Black Château and is a multi-media brand that promotes books through its website, a radio show/podcast, and events. Passionate about lifting the voices of others, Duffy became the license-holder and lead organizer for TEDxResedaBlvd in 2019. The event has the theme of “Connected” because Reseda Boulevard is a connecting artery in the San Fernando Valley. It spans the area, connecting people and industries. TEDxResedaBlvd was held Sunday, November 17th, 2019 at The Airtel Plaza, which is also a connecting hub. Situated on the property of the Van Nuys airport, the hotel was built for the 1984 Olympics which connected Los Angeles with the world. Another TEDxResedaBlvd is anticipated to happen in 2020.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting one’s own business is a huge leap. The easy thing is staying tied to the security and normalcy of a “career” in the corporate world like everyone else. As an entrepreneur, my biggest obstacle was my own reservations, fears, and all those voices in my head saying it was too risky. I am so happy I was wrong! I did it, and overcoming the obstacles I laid at my own feet is the biggest hurdle I’ve jumped so far.

Black Chateau Enterprises – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in promoting authors and their books. As well as personalities or companies with personality.

Unlike other PR firms or marketing agencies, our integrated approach uses many disciplines to create well-rounded approach. Ultimately, the goal is lifting up the voices of storytellers and getting their message out to those who want to hear it most. Not only do we use traditional methods, but we have developed several systems and strategies that set us apart.

Because the foundation of an author’s brand is their online platform–meaning their website, social media, Amazon profile, etc., we are particularly proud of the website design awards we’ve won. We recently won the Global Trend Ascent Award for the website design and branding of one of our personality brand’s websites. Last year, we won the W3 Gold Award for our Books That Make You website.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My success was breaking away and starting my own agency so I could create a company that reflects my values and vision.

Personally, nothing is more rewarding than when a client scores something big–like hitting the number one spot on an Amazon Best-Seller’s List, winning an award for their writing, securing the book signing at the coveted bookstore they always wanted to be at, getting the TV interview they always dreamed of and getting the recognition they deserve after pouring their blood and soul into their writing.

Being successful means being resourceful and agile. Figuring out a way to achieve results is key. In the digital world, where a lot of our marketing and public relations activities take place, we are constantly adjusting strategies and finding new ways of achieving success for our clients.
