Meet Denys Krutko of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denys Krutko

Hi Denys, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hey, I’m Denys, founder and CEO at Owlet Bikes, and my story is a journey of passion and innovation that began far from the sunny streets of Los Angeles. Born in Kyiv into a family of engineers, my early years were filled with a fascination for inventions and the thrill of engineering. From crafting aircraft models to diving into programming and game development, I always dreamed of creating something truly extraordinary.
My academic path led me to the Faculty of Electronics at KPI, where I delved into the world of technology. Though I soon realized that the real adventure lay beyond the confines of traditional education. I embarked on a multifaceted career journey, exploring a wide range of projects from crafting industrial metrology devices and designing aviation trainer systems to experimenting with motion simulation, developing UAVs, and delving into game development. Each project was a step towards discovering technology and myself.

In 2020, during the pandemic, my life took a pivotal turn. I met Anastasia, and our connection was instant and profound. Together, we explored new horizons, and it was through our collaboration that the vision for Owlet Bikes was born. Anastasiia, with her incredible design sensibility, helped shape the sleek, minimalist look of Owlet and inspired me to create a product that reflects both innovation and style.

As we navigated the challenges of a world in lockdown, we turned our shared passion into a tangible vision. Owlet Bikes emerged as a blend of excitement and sustainability, merging the thrill of a motorbike with the practicality of a bicycle. We aimed to create something that would not only make commuting more enjoyable but also contribute to a greener future.

In the heart of downtown Los Angeles, our team has been dedicated to bringing Owlet to life. From thrilling exhibitions to insightful test rides, every step has been a testament to our dream.

Owlet is more than just an e-bike; it’s a new way to experience commuting. Designed to offer a thrilling ride and a deep connection with the road, Owlet combines the excitement of motorcycling with the safety and versatility of a bicycle.

Its unique design and intuitive handling turn every journey into an adventure. Fueled by passion and a shared vision, our team is excited to embark on this thrilling journey together.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t been entirely smooth, though it’s been incredibly rewarding. Blending design with ergonomics and perfecting the geometry for exceptional control and stability took more time than we anticipated. Building and refining prototypes involved numerous iterations and extensive testing. Now, we’re tackling new challenges like entering the market, setting up manufacturing, and optimizing costs—all while managing a product with over 50 unique parts. Despite these hurdles, the process of creating and evolving our e-bike has been a truly fulfilling adventure.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work spans engineering, design, and innovative product development. At Owlet Bikes Inc., our Owlet One RS 3 features the first-ever customizable wheelbase, allowing riders to choose their preferred look and feel while riding, alongside its unique design and intuitive handling.

We’re also excited about our second product in development—a powerful moped currently in testing. It features a single-part aluminum cast frame weighing only 22 pounds and a custom battery integration that keeps the frame as thin as 4 inches. This design not only offers a unique and nimble appearance but also emphasizes scalability and affordability in manufacturing.

I really enjoy how Owlet integrates my diverse experiences into products that may bring something new and unique. What sets us apart is our commitment to innovative design and practical functionality, ensuring every ride is a unique adventure.

And bikes are only the beginning.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that creating innovative products requires more than just technical skill; it demands a deep understanding of manufacturing, the market, effective management, and the ability to adapt. Early on, I focused heavily on the technical aspects, but I soon realized that success also hinges on aligning design with user needs and scalability, and building a strong team.
