Today we’d like to introduce you to Deitra Leak.
Hi Deitra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved from Philadelphia to Cali, Aug. 1st, 2013 to pursue my acting career. My heart was always in acting since I was five years old. My mother would wake me up to entertain her friends. Which I loved to do, I would sing and dance to Diana Ross records! Fast forward to four years later, I starred in my 4th-grade play. I knew then and there this is what I wanted to do when I got older. Through all my trials and tribulations, I am here. My path and journey made it so I can pursue my career fearlessly!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t a smooth road but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I moved here with my son in tow. Being a single parent, pursuing my acting career and also working was definitely a challenge. Thank God I have a great and caring son that was/is rooting for me. A great support system (family& friends) back home and friends here I met along the way. That is what gave me the strength to persevere!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Sag-Aftra actor/producer. I’ve had roles in Shameless, Young & The Restless, and Unfaithful Stories to name a few. I am always auditioning for roles. Most recently, I booked a show, but not allowed to say until it comes out! I’m excited about that! I love acting, I also love producing. I’m in the process of making my production company a realization! With my first project going into production the 1st quarter of 2021! What sets me apart from others?…. I believe in God and I’m also spiritual. I know I’m on the right path. My path is to inspire others and help the children. When it’s all said and done, I will have a nonprofit foundation/charity to help inner-city youth (nationwide) with the resources I never had growing up. From having free acting, modeling and music lessons to counseling for traumas. The children are our future and we as adults have the responsibility to give them every chance at life to be whatever they want to be without restrictions!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the entertainment industry very diverse more so than ever! From more actors to directors, producers and writers on major productions. I see more people of color in charge, having equal/more control of the narratives that are portrayed on tv and film screens. Shedding light on positive characters of color than ever before. At the end of the day, it’s about equality for all walks of life and we are headed in the right direction.
