Today we’d like to introduce you to Deandra Jackson.
Hi Deandra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I originally started my journey at a makeup school. I had a real passion back then for makeup, but I also wanted to learn more about how to do brows and how to take care of the skin. After speaking with some of my teachers at the school about it, I waited until after I was done with school to look further into how to become an esthetician. I started my apprenticeship in 2017, and I became licensed in 2018. I began to work for the salon where I was taught.
Throughout my journey there, I became more and more passionate about brows and skin. The more I did them, the better I became. My skills developed faster than I expected. I also learned how to manage and operate a salon. Because of everything I learned, I knew there was more out there for me, and more I wanted to do with my license. I didn’t want to continue to work for someone else or continue to help build their dream. I wanted to create something of my own and invest in my own dreams.
After going back and forth about this decision, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own business. In January of 2022, I quit my job! In February, I officially opened and launched Dee’s Brow Magic! Since being in business, I have learned even more about running a business. There are highs and lows, but I wouldn’t change any decision I made. For the first time in my life, I have freedom and I have a career that I love, and I get to do what I’m passionate about.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I’ve faced many disappointments and challenges. Clients who decided not to follow me after saying they would. Clients suddenly stopped coming, which was tough for me because I thought I had a personal relationship with most of my clients. Struggling to get my suite together the first day I started. I had issues with the first suite I rented, management issues, and building issues. I moved to a new suite and three months later had an accidental fire. I had to learn about creating content and how to promote and market myself. I’m still learning these things currently; marketing and promoting is my biggest challenge right now.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a brow and skin specialist. I do skin treatments to help maintain and correct skin issues. I also help people fall in love with their eyebrows. I shape, restructure, and rehab eyebrows. What I’m best known for is rehabbing eyebrows, fixing shapes, and transforming not-so-good eyebrows into Amazing! Eyebrows. What sets me apart is my technique, how I see an eyebrow, and its potential in order to make it better. I offer ideas and solutions to help your eyebrows get better if that can’t happen naturally.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Unfortunately, I don’t have any advice at the moment, I am still looking for a mentor and ways to network. I have tried finding other great local artists on social media to stay inspired. I sometimes ask them for help with things that I see they are better at. But I am open to someone who may be a mentee and ideas on how and where to network.
