Today we’d like to introduce you to David Wohlman.
Uncle Dave’s Housing started as a dream of David Wohlman in the fall of 2009. As a licensed Drug and Alcohol counselor, he saw a need for low-cost transitional housing in the greater Los Angeles area. Upon taking a leave of absence from working at Tarzana Treatment Center he obtained donations to open the doors of his first house to help others. This house was opened in January 2010 and is located in South Los Angeles. It has stood as an example of what a low-cost transitional living should look like for over three years. Today Uncle Dave houses over 100 men every night that would otherwise be living on the streets or on a friend’s couch. Uncle Dave changed his life after serving one year in prison for white collar crime. Today is of maximum service to these men living at one of his five houses.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The city of Pasadena shut down two of my houses as it was based upon a law that no more than six persons not blood-related could live under the same roof. They charged me with 200 misdemeanor counts while I was only trying to help people rebuild their lives.
Please tell us about Uncle Dave’s Housing.
I am the housing coordinator for five houses that have a total of 140 beds. These are transitional houses which means it’s the step between homeless shelters/living on the streets and having your own apartment. I am responsible for supervising the managers and assistant managers at each house.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Driving to Las Vegas with my parents and sisters. My parents were also both holocaust survivors in Auschwitz.
