Meet Dante Dorris of Tey’s Training & Therapy in The Valley & Ventura County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dante Dorris.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I came to California about six years ago for football & school from Jersey. I had no family or anything I just took a chance. Shortly after my tenure at Ventura College, I decided to take a different path due to multiple surgeries.

Probably was one of the hardest times of my life. I was lost & decided to start training a few friends. In the midst of being lost, I decided to enroll into school for massage therapy on to add value to my services.

Throughout the years, I’ve had many ups and downs. Thought about going back to the east coast many times but realized I was built for this lifestyle & there was no way I could quit.

Years later, all the work is starting to pay off. For both training & massage therapy, I have so much more to learn & I’m excited what the future has to offer!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. At Ventura College, I was dead broke, didn’t drive, had a lot of hungry nights. There were times where we had 8-10 grown men living in a two bedroom apartment.

As football players, you tend to be so sold on the fact you’ll make it professionally so when things took a turn it was hard to cope with.

As far as training, I’ve had to beg people to work with me. Trained for free, had people not pull up to sessions. At times I knew I loved it but It wasn’t making sense financially especially living in expensive ass California. The same goes for massage. It took me 2.5 years after I finished school to pay off the program. I just got certified in December.

What’s really hard too is all the people back home who think you’re doing it big just because you’re in Cali. I knew they meant well but it was hard explaining to them, I know I post my work on social media platforms and you see me working but I been through hell & back out here.

Tey’s Training & Therapy – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Teys Training & Therapy is very versatile. I believe some trainers just train & some therapists just do Body Work. With me, you get the best of both worlds with two crafts that go hand in hand. I’m proud to be a dual threat in my field & educate people on the importance of recovery & living a healthy lifestyle. It’s a lot of work but if I die today, I want to be able to say I changed some lives for the better. Leave an impact on the world in a positive way.

As far as training, I’m big on mobility, injury prevention, and just overall movement. I believe movement is key to longevity. It’s cool to look good and be strong but I don’t believe enough people feel good. I think that needs to change & people need to put their egos to the side & address their actual needs. Not just for the moment but as a lifestyle. You don’t want to be 35 years old and you can’t play with your kids because your back hurts or you never addressed your bad knee you hurt 15 years ago.

As far as massage therapy, I have my own unique style. I tend to shy away from offering massages and say bodywork instead. I was blessed enough to work with some great doctors that showed me a lot at Sports Rehab of LA. I’ve also had five surgeries so I personally know the process on how to rehab from multiple injuries. Whether it be massage, graston, cupping, and stretching. Massage is very powerful & I love that about it.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t really have too many moments. I guess I’d like to say I’m proud to have worked with as many people as I have. I’m self-motivated so I’m looking forward to future accomplishments and continuing to get better.
