Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Tuchman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dani. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My aunt gave me my first camera when I was eight years old. It was a red Canon Powershot and it took the lowest quality photos. I loved it. I took pictures of everything I saw, and later videos when I received a camcorder two years later. I was a pretty weird kid and had a hard time getting words out to convey what I was thinking. Photography almost became this new language for me, evolving over the years with each new stage of life.
Like many artists in their formative years, establishing a tone and style proved incredibly difficult. Thirteen years later, after studying countless inimitable photographers and painters, I’ve retained three self-guiding rules. One that there are no rules. Two, style and tone are constantly evolving; the subject should be the determinant. Three, if art fails to evoke an emotion, is it really art at all? These principles free me from a pigeon-holed look at photography, allowing me to shoot all types of things. Namely: urban decay, landscapes, and strangers.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a pretty smooth road. Somewhere around age 17, a lot of doubt crept in which set stifled my creativity and the desire to keep pushing on as an artist. With photography it’s tricky–cause there’s a lot of people doing it. But, as a friend commented on a while back, not everyone’s doing it well. In the last few years, I’ve reinvented my outlook on the medium and myself, taking everything a little less seriously which certainly helps.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dani Tuchman Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As a freelance photographer with no formal business or name, I get to work on a variety of things. Whether it be weddings, musicians, restaurants, or personal projects, I think of myself as genre-fluid.
On January 24th, I had my first solo exhibition. Over 100 people showed up and I’d say that collection is my strongest body of work to date.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The art and music scene is Los Angeles is unlike anywhere else. That being said, there’s illimitable inspiration coming from all corners of the city.
Least favorite? Traffic. Cliché, but true.
