Meet Dan Jablons of Retail Smart Guys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Jablons.

Hi Dan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I lead two lives.

One life is that of a retail consultant. I started working in retail when I was 17. Right after college, I worked for a kids’ clothing manufacturer, but my job was to talk to retailers. Then I worked for a point of sale company, installing systems into retail stores. Nearly 20 year ago, I started Retail Smart Guys, which provides merchandise planning services (and lots more) to independent retailers in 18 countries today!

The other life is that of an actor. I started doing improv in New York in the 80’s. Since then, I’ve appeared in lots of film, TV shows, and commercials. I’m best known as Larry David’s lawyer on Curb Your Enthusiasm, but have also worked with Pierce Brosnan, Adam Devine, Danny DeVito, and most recently, Willem Defoe!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s hard to balance two careers that are both moving forward. Scheduling is a nightmare! And, before I had my own consulting company, it was hard to do any acting work. Now, it’s all about balancing all of those activities.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We help independent retailers plan their sales, and then plan their inventory, so they achieve maximum cash flow, maximum profitability, and gain more market share.

What sets us apart from the others is in our logo: we “Plan with Heart!” That means that we treat every business as if we owned it, or as if it was owned by a family member. We take it to that level. We also have tons of support systems for all our retail clients so that their lives are made easier.

(I thought I’d sneak in something here about my acting – this year, a film that I wrote won a contest, and the film is being produced! I hope to find more time for writing, and certainly plan on being involved in more movies and more TV shows too!)

Any big plans?
We just developed our own planning/forecasting platform, which we are proud of. We will be expanding our offerings to more retailers, and adding more retail consultants to help retailers worldwide.
